27178 2001-12-10 05:26:00 I have a gigabyte GA-6BXC Motherboard. I have just installed a stick of 256MB RAM
from Dick Smith. The computer only recognises it as 128MB. My first thoughts were faulty RAM so I swapped it for another. Same result.
I have tried different slots, combined it with other RAM but it only recognises 128 on startup. My current setup has the 256MB and another 128MB RAM installed.
SiSoft utility reports
< Physical/Bios Memory Banks >
DIMM1 Empty
DIMM2 128MB DIMM SDRAM single-bank
DIMM3 128MB DIMM SDRAM single-bank

< logical/Chipset Memory Banks >
Bank 2 Setting: 64MB SDRAM 7-1-1-1-R 5-1-1-1W 2-22-2CL
Bank 3 Setting: 64MB SDRAM Dito above after
Bank 4 Setting: 128MB SDRAM Ditto above after.

< Memory Modules >
Memory Module 2: 256MB 8x(16Mx16) SDRAM PC133U-222-542 (CL3 upto 133MHz)
Meemory Module 3: 128MB 8x(16Mx8) SDRAM PC!##U-333-522 (CL3 upto 143MHz)
So the full 256MB is detected in one place! Is it being used? Can I find out?
Thanks for any thoughts DW

27179 2001-12-10 06:07:00 It is likley that being a very
old Bx m/b that the bios won,t recognise 256m sticks, you might have to opt for 2 128m sticks.
Windows will probably be able to detect it ,even though the
bios can,t,but it won,t be able to use it.
Have a look at the m/b manual,it will tell you what size modules it can use.

27180 2001-12-10 06:36:00 Have a close look at your new Ram...Does it have chips on both Sides?

Your motherboard is able to cope with 256megs BUT it needs to have chips on Both sides. Hence the reason it can only see half of it.

Go back to your supplier and see if they will supply you a Double sided version..That should sort you out..

27181 2001-12-10 06:37:00 Thanks Tech_ Mister. I thought I had checked that out but on relooking at the manual in the box (labled GA-6BXC) it is for a GA-6BA. That one can handle 256MB but I presume now that the GA-6BXC can't. Perhaps someone with the correct manual could confirm? DW Guest (0)
