27625 2001-12-15 12:02:00 my manufacturer replaced my hdd when it failed. 20 gb maxtor replaced by seagate. it is ata 100 and i also have a dma 33 10gb maxtor 'd' drive. RAID array also.
trouble is windows XP thinks these hard drives are scsi's. they are ide. the old 'd' drive always was and we have physically checked. they are ide. going through the device manager windows lists them as scsi.
there are ide drivers listed and they are supposedly working ok. so why do the drives think they are scsi?
worse still i think all this is why i can't get imaging programs like ghost 2002 or powerquest(pq) driveimage5 to work properly. and beyond that also pq partion magic. after all if windows xp, the drives, and i are confused, then so must these programs be as well.
since these programs operate from dos it may not just be windows. can't see anything obvious at bios level though.
don't know much about RAID though.
any idea's people???

27626 2001-12-15 20:30:00 John Tester ,

Lets talk raid first .
RAID is to connect 2+ whole hdd's and make 1
partion . Back to your question . This might be a conflict of raid first . Disable RAID and see if it works . If not , unplug one drives ide port then try again . If the problem still ain't fixed , then you'll maybe want to switch to windows 98se or Me or maybe install a newer driver version for your ide controller . The raid might not be the problem but it might be a checkpoint for all of this fuss (technically) .
Merry Christmas

27627 2001-12-16 02:37:00 The RAID software will be written for SCSI drives. To make it easier to maintain, it is a relatively easy matter to make IDE drives appear to be SCSI. There will probably be a driver loaded called 'idescsi' or something like that.

However, imaging software will want to access the IDE drives at a low level.

Partition Magic etc will be just as bad.

I don't think you are *using* RAID; turn it off.

27628 2001-12-17 09:44:00 Hi John
Windows interprets any add-on hard drive controller as a SCSI controller. This even applies to the onboard type. I have an Asus A7V with an additional controller and it is also identified as SCSI. You either didn't notice it before or your BIOS had it disabled before and when your drive was replaced your manufacturer enabled it. Have you tried using ghost from bootable DOS disks?

27629 2001-12-17 09:47:00 both replies have given me a lot of info.thanks. easy enough to turn off RAID. will see what that does. will have to see if i need to load new drivers. i always thought RAID gave improved performance. what would happen if i turn it on again after partioning? may take a while one step at a time. also have seagate diagnostic, itmay show something? 27630 2001-12-17 10:21:00 yes, ghost 2002 still did not work from dos disks. well it started and just ran out of steam. no error messages just faked it was working when it had ground to a halt. at least drive image had decency to throw up an error mess.where in bios is the setting you mentioned. are you saying disabling RAID will help?
