27718 2001-12-16 19:19:00 I have a hard drive as master on the primary channel and a CD-Rom as master on the secondary channel. I am about to add a CD-Writer (Mitsumi 4808) to the second channel. I wish to set the CD-Writer as master on the secondary channel and change the CD-Rom to slave on that same channel.

When I reboot after installing the CD-Writer, should I leave the CD-Rom disconnected so that the CD Writer is detected as master, or can I have both connected (to the ribbon etc)so that both are detected in their master/slave positions?

Should I expect any IRQ problems as I only have one free-IRQ #3.

27719 2001-12-16 19:39:00 You will probably need to change the jumpers on the back end of the CD's to make them perform as you ask.

Both the CDs and your hard drive should be able to share installed hardware resources in your computer so there should be no IRQ problems.

27720 2001-12-16 21:05:00 As said cange the jumper on the CD ROM(usually at back) to slave(SL),CD RW should be on master by default(check?). Plug them in turn it on and if your CMOS/BIOS config allows it should auto detect drives on start up, if all 4 IDE channels are set to auto set the Primary/slave to none to boot up quicker(It will save time by not looking).
Hope that helps.

Don't put both the cds on the secondary channel. Put the reader on the primary channel as the slave drive and the writer as the master on the secondary channel. Experience has shown that if you put them both on the secondary channel you will have trouble copying from cd to cd and if you have the writer on the primary channel you will have trouble writing to any cd. You need to set the jumpers correctly on the drives to determine master/slave. You may also need to check the jumper on the hard drive is set as master. Setting the drive numbers can be done in Windows in the system config. section (press Windows key + Break key). Have fun!

27723 2001-12-16 22:22:00 keep the cd and harddrives on seperate ide channels as putting a cd drive with a hardrive can slow the hardrive performance down.

if you are really serious with the cd burning get an ata card and stick all the drives as master on there own ide channel.
