2001-12-18 23:22:00 | I am only able to run a successful defrag in safe mode. When I try to run it out of safe mode it gets to around 10% and then restarts. It continues to repeat this process over and over. How can I make it so that the defrag program will work properly out of safe mode? Note: I am running Windows 98 (not SE)

2001-12-18 23:41:00 | you are already running windows defrag the best way, why change? windows defrag is a bit of a blah design......the only way to really fix it is to not use it and go use a third party one such as nortons speed disk(which i recommend as its really good).

You can download this programme for free from http://www.powerdefrag.com/ It works best i find if you run its Scan Disk programme first. A real positive is that in comparison to Windows Defrag, Power Defrag is fast. All the best. |

2001-12-19 00:20:00 | pick a time when you are not going to use your pc for a while, scan disc first then start your defrag then go away and leave it till it finishes.most pc's stop and start on ms defrag.most important of all is defrag weekly and you will find your defrag will become a lot smoother and faster | Guest (0) | |

2001-12-19 00:59:00 | Suggest you click CTRL-ALT-DELETE and close all programmes that appear on the menu BUT NOT 'systray' nor 'explorer'. You should now be able to defrag. | Guest (0) | |
2001-12-19 01:43:00 | Another program is accessing the disk. Close down other non-essential applications either manually, or by using a program such as Enditall. Read more about Enditall here www.pcmag.com | Guest (0) | |
2001-12-19 02:40:00 | ...if you are able to defrag in 'Safe Mode' and not experience the '10% Restart' annoyance - then your Screen saver is probably the problem when attempting to defrag normally. Right click an empty space on the Desktop, select Properties and open the Screen Saver tab. Disable or turn it off (none). TIP: You can safely run the Windows ME defragger on your system and decrease defrag time by more than 90% [i kid you not!!!] The WinME defragger may be downloaded free from the following URL. Simple to install, restart your system before using the first time - then sit back and be *amazed*. Cheers!!! e_ surecool.com
