28050 2001-12-19 12:54:00 If windows has auto detected the CD-ROM the DOS drivers will probably not be installed. Firstly you will need to add a line to the CONFIG.SYS to load the CD-ROM driver on startup. Also you will have to run MSCDEX.EXE with the name of the driver in DOS to enable the CD-ROM. Guest (0)
28051 2001-12-19 18:05:00 Unfortunately w95 startup disk won't install your cd rom.
There are ways around it though.

You can search the net for a W95 boot disk with CD rom support.

Another good one is 'CD rom god', this will boot from 'a drive' and give you a choice of about 50 different CD roms that it can install automatically.

Another thing you could do, because your computer is to old to have boot up from CD in the bios, is to get 'Ghost PE' then you can make an exact copy of one HDD to another HDD. Keep the copy seperate from your computer, and in the event of a major crash, virus, or HDD completely stopping, you can put the spare in, and it will boot up and run exactly the same, as your computer did at the time you made the copy.

28052 2001-12-19 21:48:00 If someone you know is running Win95 OSR2 or Win98, ask him/her to make you an Emergency Bootup Floppy Disk.
When you boot from that disk, it will have the option to 'Start with CD-ROM Support'. Provided your CD-ROM is not too old, or a model that is connected to the soundcard, it will most probably find it. Try this for a backup: copy the Win95 setup files (CD-ROM:\Win95 on the CD) onto a spare 400MB hdd and install that as a slave drive in your pc. Anytime you want to reinstall Windows, run setup.exe from the 2nd hdd, after formatting C:.
Hope this helps.

28053 2001-12-19 22:03:00 it is quite simple to get this drive to work, i can send you some files to put on a disk that will allow you to boot into dos, and your cd player will work fine.

(i have the same cd player in my box and i have a dos driver for it.)

send me an email at: craig_b@paradise.net.nz
