28331 2001-12-22 10:24:00 after deleting a program I found that the modem would connect and talk to the ISP.
But no data xfer would take place,DNS errors and protocol
errors were observed.
Trying all D/Up network settings and reloading windows ME twice did not help at all.
reloaded a 8 week old backup set of cdrw files got me running again.
The D/up networking setup after recovery was the same as i had tried while in crash mode.
This has happened to others as well.
what causes and cures it ????

28332 2001-12-22 12:27:00 I am also interested in what causes this.
Same problem but on w98. Ping test gets host unknown on domain names, and request time outs with ip addresses. Indicates some sort of dns error?. Reinstalled all network components, dialup networking and internet explorer. Did a system file check that showed up nothing. Did a system restore and that still didn't solve the problem. Ended up formating and reinstalling. A frustrating process, so I would be interested in knowing any reasons or fixes for this particular problem.

28333 2001-12-23 02:35:00 Looks as if your gateway address is wrong. You can't get a DNS to resolve a hostname to get an ip address unless you can get out through a gateway to the DNS; you can't get to an ip address without a gateway. Guest (0)
28334 2001-12-26 08:56:00 You can often cure strange stuff like this by ripping out *all* the networking stuff, including un-installing dial-up networking and then putting it all back again. In *really* extreme cases you migth also have to manually remove networking related files and, even rarer, edit the registry. Guest (0)
