| 28225 | 2001-12-21 08:08:00 | Does anyone know how to select a good webcam? I was thinking about the Use Your Head Plus package from Dick Smith (USB Internet camera provides up to 352x288dpi at up to 30fps)-- is it good? I'm running Win 98, P3 450MHz with 128MB RAM -- will that be sufficient or just borderline? | Guest (0) | ||

Don't go for the one you're looking at, you can't rely of them very well. Two very good models I'd recommend (if you don't plan to do much, or can't afford top quility stuff) are: Intel Easy PC Camera which gives you the same resolution but tons more software when its actually cheaper. With it been made by Intel, you can easily trust them that that won't just make any old junk. Philips PCVC665K Webcam which gives you double resolution 640x480 with 30ftps for snapshots but the same for video, but without so much software, but all the ones you'll ever need anyway if you're a normal home users. Again, Philips make stunning multimedia goods, so you could trust them too, but be careful with this one because it only supports windows 98, and its is also been around a while. The price of these are actually (suprised me) quite cheap. For the Intel one which retails up to 169+gst, you can get for 69+gst! Philips you can get for $60 inc gst! You can also get this one a bit more expensive for $65+gst or $85+gst. Intel are sold at many computer shops but for $69 go to LCQ Computers at 51 New North Rd, Eden Terrace, AKL ph: 303 3908. For Philips visit http://www.consumablecity.com/ who are based in Henderson, AKL but will do free freight for purchases over $40. You can also get these again at LCQ for $65+gst or a shop in Greenlane (tell me if you want to know more) for $85+gst. Again, like I said before, this is only a guide, which I think will suits you're needs if you're looking for the kind of stuff at DSE. Depending one what you need it for you could spend thousnads or tens of dollars. Again, I've got two more models I could perhaps tell you about, but not as good, both Chicony one which is same resoltuion as what is at DSE and one that is double (but for both video AND snapshots) one's 59+gst while ones 89+gst (last time I looked at them) which you could get at LCQ too. Hopes my advice are helpful and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tip: Go for a look at LCQ, becuase they're actually unbelievable in price, funny that the same price can have $200 difference. Only thing is their English is very good. They're actually one of the cheapest shops I've seen, and also you could even make a offer, and sometimes they just say ok and give you the stuff at your price. Don't know how they live by making $2 on a product hundreds of dollars. They even make other's price! even when they lose money! Very funny people! |

He's regretting it now... there is no webcam software other than the driver and no manual for the camera! He wonders whether the image quality of the Intel webcam will be better. Also, is there any good webcam software you would recommends? Thanks for the advice, have a merry christmas and happy new year! |

They may cost more but they also generally have loads of software eg editing, effects & photo albums. Being portable you can take shots while away from home etc, and many cameras can now record short movie files which you can share with others while on the net or via email etc. | Guest (0) | ||
