| 28581 | 2001-12-26 06:25:00 | Hi there everyone. You can probably tell thanks to all my posts that I'm having trouble with my new motherboard. My computer is a 1ghz Duron, with Epox EP-8KTA3L+ motherboard, it has 256mb RAM (one 128mb and two 64mb chips), Abit Siluro MX400 64mb, Sound blaster live, plus network card, modem. It has one 13gig hard drive, which is probably 2 years old, and two CD drives - but currently I've unplugged one. I use an ATA66/100 (?) cable to connect the ATA33 (?) Hard drive. Windows 98 either crashes on boot up, or occasionally loads. The error message is simple 'Windows Protection Fault' or something similar. Sometimes all I get is a black screen or a blue, DOS screen. I often get told MSGSERV32 (or similar) has crashed also. I just reinstalled Windows 98 - no change. Windows XP comes up with a stop error, and it finds something seriously wrong, because I can't even use the CD to boot up and reinstall. I have taken out all cards except graphics card, all RAM except the 128mb one, and now I don't know what to do. Windows 98 always is able to boot into Safe Mode and I can boot using a floppy. Other than that, I can't find much I can do. This has been annoying, because this is my first ever 'foray' into via chipsets, as apposed to Intel, and I don't like the trouble I've been having. Any, ANY help would be much appreciated, Jonathan Giles |

Booted back into the Operating System and reshared the drive. I was having problems with my network and it fixed the problem with msgserv32. |

Please note, I only installed the motherboard and processor the other day - so this is overall what is causing the computer to play up. Thanks for your help Jonathan Giles |

MSGSERV errors normally arise when Windows has used all available resources (quite often seen when trying to read faulty CDRoms etc)so again this points to a ram type error. Alan |

You can't expect to put an entirley different motherboard in, and have two operating systems recognize all of the changes. Between the two systems there are probably over 30 different drivers installed to your HDD. Most of the existing drivers on your HDD will be wrong for the new motherboard, mainly the system devices. I think the only way you will get back to a good clean system, is to format, and reinstall the two operating systems. Goodluck anyway. |

Luckely I work for a PC Company, so I got my whole PC checked out. It was the cache on the processor that was causing all of the grief. Got a new AMD Duron 850, and everything was sweet. Don't know if this helps. |
