28567 2001-12-26 01:23:00 I have 2 computers I am trying to network.
#1. A Celeron 700 running Windows XP Professional and
#2. A Cyrix 200 running Win 98SE, both with plenty of RAM
I have set up XP Professional as a member of a workgroup. They both have modems and network adapter cards which are installed and check OK. I have an CAT5 crossover cable (recommended for networking two computers).

I ran the Network Wizard on XP and set up #1 as an ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) as recommended. made sure the workgroup name is the same for both computers, folders shared and drives mapped (from #1). Created a Network Wizard Startup floppy disk and ran this on #2. After the required reboot the wizard would not continue - it stated the Network Hardware was not setup. As everything looks fine with the NW adapter settings I tried to connect and, oddly enough, I can connect to #2 from #1 no problem, but when trying to connect, or map a drive, from #2 to #1, it recognises the resource on #1 but insists on me supplying a password to make a connection. Whatever password I enter, and I`ve tried them all, it won't let me in.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

28568 2001-12-26 06:43:00 I too had the same problem. It was a while back when I got Windows ME (Memory Hogging Program) and my other machine running Win98SE. I ran the network wizard made a floppy disk ran that on my Win98 machine. Rebooted and nothing. I did it a few times too and sometimes it installed protocols called Internet Connectiong Sharing (home or shared) but they didn't work for me.

So I removed the settings the network wizard did and manually set up the computer giving it a static IP, same workgroup and different computer names.

Downloaded WinProxy from www.winproxy.com for Internet Sharing. And it worked.

If anyone knows about ICS with windows as I've never been able to get it to work. Not even in Win2k or XP.

I don't know what features Windows ICS has but WinProxy has a few good features. I'm sure other proxy software do too.

WinXP Home Edition may not work with WinProxy even though it says it's compatible. My friend is having trouble with it and I did too when I used remote assistance to her computer.

28569 2001-12-26 06:46:00 KameKrazee stated another problem with ICS but not your problem.

Yours seems related to the fact that Win98SE cannot read NTFS partitions. If you want to share from your XP machine you gonna have to make another partition on your drive with a Fat32 File System so Win98SE can see it. Else your going to have to use XP to send files over to Win98

28570 2001-12-26 08:49:00 I usually just lurk here, but I *had* to reply to this to put the record straight. Gen Eric's reply is *completely* incorrect - Windows 98 indeed cannot *directly* read NTFS but in your case it it WindXP that is reading NTFS, *not* Windows 98, because you are accessing that resource over a network. You do not need to anything at all with regard to partitioning.
To fix your problem make sure that you have a local user account on the WinXP box with the same username and password that you use to login to the Win98 box.
