28552 2001-12-25 22:22:00 hey there, I recently took out my aging BX mobo which had an 400Mhz Celeron, and have replaced it with a Epox EP-8kTA3L+ mobo with a 1ghz Duron.
Since doing this, XP refuses to load, and Windows 98 is very unstable, that's if it actually boots in the first place.

XP mentions a STOP error, and suggests check my hard drives and make sure they are terminated correctly.

I also notice in explorer now, Windows identifies my 3 and a half floppy drive as a 5 and a quarter floppy drive - perhaps this could be the problem?

Any suggestions, further questions, etc, would be much appreciated,
thanks in advance,
Jonathan Giles

28553 2001-12-25 23:09:00 hi Jonathan,

have you reinstalled either OS? I wouldn't hold out much hope of sucessfully changing motherboards under XP without a reinstall. If you can get it to boot it will likely need reactivation anyway. As for win98 you should be able to start in safe mode and delete everything from device manager. Then redetect the whole lot after rebooting. After redetection install your motherboard drivers etc and you should be away. If you have reinstalled the OS and you are having problems then check your RAM is seated properly. Unless you have SCSI don't worry about termination of HDDs. The floppy issue will likely be a simple setting in the BIOS of the new board to set the FDD type.

28554 2001-12-25 23:21:00 Thanks alot, I'll go and do that now.

One question:
My Windows XP partition is a NTFS file system, and I need to take a file away with me on the 28th - how can I do this if XP doesn't wanna boot? Nor can I get to the recovery console (same error comes up)

Thanks,
Jonathan

28555 2001-12-26 08:19:00 anon's right, you were crazy to swap motherboards, without reformating and reinstalling your OS's. You will probably have endless troubles untill you do it. Guest (0)
