28538 2001-12-25 09:37:00 Hi there, I have a problem:

I got a new motherboard, which has a Duron 1ghz processor, but I have upgraded from an older motherboard, which I used an ATA33 Hard drive. This new motherboard (an Epox EP-8KTA3L+) came with an ATA66 cable (I think), and XP chucks up an error on startup, which I assume is related to this.

My question is, can I use my ATA33 cable on this motherboard? or don't you think my problem is related to this cable (the error message suggests the hard drive is at fault).

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan Giles

But yes you can use an ATA 33 cable on your ATA66 IDE controller. You may as well try it out and if errors persist contact your local PC World Press F1 help forum with the problem you have been getting.

Using an ATA 33 cable would only slow down devices that are ATA 66/100 if you ran it on that cable. But they would still work. I don't have an ATA 33 HDD but I've got ATA 33 CD ROM Drives running off ATA 66/100 cables with no problems.

28540 2001-12-25 23:26:00 hi Jonathan,

you can run ata66 devices on an ata33 cable, but things often play up if you put ata33 devices on an ata66 cable.

28541 2001-12-26 11:30:00 thats not like you anon anon ;-) thats back to front. ata66 devices(ie hardrive) require ata66(80wire) cable(when fitted to a ata6/100 motherboard). in fact some motherboards will drop the speed down to ata33 if it detects a ata33(40wire) cable(i found out the hard way).
