| 28511 | 2001-12-24 21:55:00 | Have just received XP.pro as a Xmas present. My problem now is, do I install it and reject my trusty win98se?. Having read of so many problems with it, would like to hear from someone with experience with win xp.pro and the advantages I would gain with it. Ron. |

The glitches were unusually serious because they allow hackers to seize control of all Windows XP operating system software without requiring a computer user to do anything except connect to the internet. |

Do some reading and clue up on partitioning and dualbooting before you start. If you are inexperienced or worried about ballsing it up, get a computer literate cobber to help you. My opinion is once you get XP on you won't go back to '98 but it is convenient to have both just in case you have programs that will only work under '98. One thing I have learned the hard way is: CHECK ANY PROGRAMS AND DEVICE DRIVERS FOR COMPATIBILITY WITH XP before you install them, and be careful, some updates and patches i.e. CD Creator, must have the patch applied before the actual program itself is installed. AS long as you do your homework and some basic research before you start it will be a breeze. HTH BC |

(as much as anything will) Security breaches apply to all Operating systems not only XP I liken it to water, you cant stop it, but you can control it. BC |

| 28516 | 2001-12-25 19:35:00 | Why dump Windows 98? From using Windows Xp Pro, I do suggest you, like the others said, to dual boot them, which means simply having them both. Although most people think XP is by miles better, it is not, it has just as many disadvantages and advantages. There will also be times when you need something that you cannot find in Windows XP, so you can then go back to Windows 98. One other reason is, XP has a very different layout format to '98, so when you just start using it, there will be heaps of stuff you don't know about yet, so having '98 helps you in a urgent situation to get something done. So my suggestion is for a start Dual Boot them and once you think you know enough of XP you can decide whether you need '98 or not. If so, just keep it that way, only thing is you may not have a lot of hard disk space, since XP uses over 1GB on the installations itself, let alone adding other things such as 'Power Toys'. So if you run out of run try getting a new hard drive even if it means a second hand one, as long as it doesn't have much bad sectors. If you can't then uninstalling some of your old games, or news' can can be run straight from CDs, to free some space, or even old documents, mp3 you don't listen to anymore, etc. That will definitely free up more than enough space. And by the way, do make sure you're system matches or betters' Windows XP's minimum system requirements. Hope this helps, Happy eXPerience! ;-) |
