28486 2001-12-24 13:10:00 Further down the page I made a posting re. using Remote assistance. Well I tried it hooked up to my fathers machine at the other end of the South Island last night, and am pleased to report it worked like magic. I fixed up his email a/c, got rid of some troublesome files and settings, imported his address book and favorites from ME on another drive, and installed a program. The connection was easy to setup, although a little slow as one would expect with a dialup connection, but on the whole I was as impressed as hell.

It's a cool feeling fooling around with someone elses computer from 500 miles away, although Dad said he was pretty nervous wathching his computer operating by itself.

Give it a go, (on anybodys but mine!) it's cool.

28487 2001-12-25 07:39:00 Good on you, I would like to do the same, but not sure how to go about it, the other PC is on Win98.
So do I dial their Phone number, or is it done through your ISP?

More info on how to carry out this function.
Thanks....John.

28488 2001-12-25 10:19:00 Hi John,
From the limited reading I have done on the subject I believe both machines need XP on them, otherwise you will need a 3rd party program such as PC Anywhere or GoTo My PC. But I could be wrong.

28489 2001-12-25 10:35:00 Hey John. BC is correct that you have to both have XP to use Remote Assistant.

I've used Remote Assistant and I find it to be similar to netmeeting. So you could always use netmeeting to connect to other computers. I haven't messed around with netmeeting that much though. Only because my mate running Win98 didn't believe I was running XP and he wanted to see what it was like.

But it has similar functions and it's just as good as Remote Assistant.

28490 2001-12-25 23:16:00 It's a shame that home edition is so crippled. The remote desktop feature in Pro runs on a light weight version of Terminal Services. You can get a TS client for anything right down to a Windows CE handheld. Guest (0)
28491 2001-12-26 09:05:00 I can go one better than that ! Built a machine for my sister (win98se) and sent to her in England. Talked her though installing a modem and setting up LapLink and then dialed in and setup the rest of her system, which included using *my* jetstart account to download and install the latest NAV defs to her machine. After I had setup her Internet, Email, re-imported data files, etc then she was hot to trot. Of course, the dial-up phone call to England wasn't so good but at least Telecom had a $10 deal on - they didn't make any money out of me ! Remote assistance of any form is very cool ! Now she is hooked up I can do it over the 'net - assuming she can get a connection and tell me the IP. Guest (0)
28492 2001-12-29 02:25:00 Isn't there some freeware called Back Orifice which does things like this? ;<) Guest (0)
