28440 2001-12-24 00:44:00 Each time I connect the computer to the ISP, I get dropped off after about 5 seconds of a successful connection. I have tried with 3 different modems (1 x PCI, 2 x ISA) in the same computer.

Two other computers in the same house, in same jack point, have no problems connecting and staying online.

Any help much appreciated.

28441 2001-12-24 01:10:00 Haven't got call waiting or any other smartphone services have you. Call waiting peeps can upset the modem and disconnect, some modems do and some don't disconnect. If you have got Call waiting put *52 infront of your dial up number and it will disable it when it dials. It resets after it hangs up. If not well sorry can't help. Guest (0)
28442 2001-12-24 02:48:00 Your symptoms suggest that the problem is neither the modems or the phone line, that only leaves IE, which version are you using and which operating system? Guest (0)
28443 2001-12-24 09:52:00 I had a similar problem when I 'upgraded' to IE 6. When I attempted to enter a secure site the modem dropped. This was caused by IE 6 altering the SS1 etc settings. I reset the parameters to default and the problem dissapeared.
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Internet - Advanced - reset defaults
that might help

28444 2001-12-25 05:01:00 Hi Pat, you have not specified how you connect to your ISP but here is a set of conditions which would cause exactly the symptoms you describe. If you use outlook express to send and receive mail and have set the option 'check for new mail at startup' and you also have 'disconnect after send and receive', then when you load OE it will request a connection to your default dialup service(ISP) find that there is nothing to send or receive and immediately (2 or 3 seconds) disconnect. Could explain why only 1 machine does it. 'Disconnect after send and recv'' can also account for those cases when a connection spontaneously drops off every 20 mins if that is how often you check for new mail, it's not an ISP conspiracy, and it can happen while you are browsing with IE and you would not notice that OE had checked for mail.
Regards PC
