| 1263563 | 2012-03-07 06:56:00 | So they want to rebuild Christchurch Cathedral! Fair enough if the Anglican Church pays for it. I will be most pissed off if the Tax payer pays for it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think that the Cathedral is a very dangerous building, is ugly, and serves no purpose other than a place to pray in. If you are a praying person do it at home! |

| 1263565 | 2012-03-07 06:59:00 | Well, it is a ChCh icon, But its up to the church to decide what to do with their property, Government, council, twats should just keep out of it. | Metla (12) | ||

Yeah, if you pray do it at home. It's a waste of money rebuilding such an ungainly thing like the cathedral. |

It either stands as is, fenced off as a monument, or it gets pulled down. Cost to rebuild should be met by the Church, their insurers, and maybe the Chch council, if they believe the building is ultimately a valuable resource to the city and its tourism. |

| 1263571 | 2012-03-07 07:55:00 | The council wants to take the land over and rebuild the cathedral with local rates money, but the church doesnt want that, not sure why as the church gets its cathedral and it wont have to pay. Seems the church is happier to leave it as a lump of rubble. Talking of stupid ideas and wasting money,.. An idea was being seriously tossed about after the Feb quake to remove whats left and pay 5 million for a cardboard church (designed by some Japanese architect) to be built on the site. |

That's on top of what the church has from insurance, reserve funds, and contributions . Ludicrous . I like Christchurch . The Cathedral was an iconic building, majestic and peaceful and I'm sad to see it in ruins . Still, Gothic cathedrals are a dime a dozen in England and Europe and if you want to enjoy them they aren't hard to find . Apart from a measure of colonial influence, this cathedral isn't more special than others . Nelson has a lovely small cathedral . I believe Christchurch Square can survive without reconstruction of what was not a particularly unique European building . It would be cool to see a new church with some extreme architecture soaring with a tower . |
