BIG BILL: Magnus O'Neill is disputing his $2000 phone bill with Telecom.

1262937 2012-03-04 19:13:00 Yeah, my nephew had a similar experience, just dealing with a few business emails and calls while on holiday overseas.

Total rip off.

Probably for every case like this we hear of there's another 20 people quietly paying their rip-off fees... and Telecom goes laughing all the way to the bank.

Got to pay for Mr Reynolds somehow I suppose.

1262938 2012-03-04 19:35:00 it won't only be with Telecom. the English watchdog is trying to force telco's over there to allow users to cap there bills to avoid this sort of thing happening in the future gary67 (56)
1262939 2012-03-04 19:44:00 What a dickhead, expecting to pay the same in the Cook Islands as here for mobile data, using his NZ SIM card! Make him pay it all, I say!

There has been plenty of media coverage in the last few years about the dangers of data roaming when overseas. I turn off all data consuming services, and/or buy a local SIM card (depending on how long I'm there for).

He admits he didn't check Telecom's data roaming charges

What an incompetent idiot!

There are reasonable assumptions which a customer may make in travelling overseas, specifically as to the reasonable amount of charges which may be incurred...

I think that is an assumption itself - perhaps one, with the benefit of hindsight, he should not have made...

Data roaming charges are ridiculously overpriced for all carriers (not just Telecom), and there is plenty of room to reduce these to a more acceptable level.

It still would not have been $2000.

That price estimation may have been based on Telecom's "casual data rate of $1 a day for up to 10MB and $1 for each additional megabyte in the same day" (from here (www.telecom.co.nz)) for prepaid customers.

But from the picture supplied with the article I think it can safely be assumed that he is a postpaid customer (since he's holding up a bill), and data for postpaid customer plans are bundled with TXT and minutes so it would be pretty damn difficult to work out the cost .. .

1262944 2012-03-04 21:13:00 I thought everyone knew when you go overseas take out your NZ sim-card and put in a local sim. If you are with telecom throw the phone away, buy a normal phone (gsm that 99% of the planet uses) and install a local sim. nerd89 (14761)

Telecom XT phones use overseas sims - what do you mean?
