1263573 2012-03-07 08:57:00 I believe Christchurch Square can survive without reconstruction of what was not a particularly unique European building. It would be cool to see a new church with some extreme architecture soaring with a tower.
If not European, where from, Maori perhaps.

I am not aware of any architecture that is not European influenced.

Even the likes of Brasilia is influenced from Europe!

1263574 2012-03-07 09:14:00 I was raised catholic, may have somewhat lost my way in the past 10 years but I still have respect for what a church represents. But as far the catherdral is concerned it was more of a tourist attraction than the center of a religious community so **** it I say. We have a whole city to worry about before giving tourism and nestelgia (spelling?) any real thought. I think we could build some sort of monument on the foundation as a memorial etc but as far as I'm concerned let's scrap every last piece of aged engineering that has or could cause injury and death in a quake prone area.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

I also don't understand why all this money is being spent by chch council and government. We had insurance? So it should cost us an excess, for the most part the insurance should be held by private entities so why is all this money being spent? And for what results? F-all has really changed aside from some half assed road repairs and tempory power/sewer fixups

1263576 2012-03-07 18:58:00 The problem for the congregation is that even if their invisible friend whips up an enormous invisible church, the unbelievers will still not be convinced. Six of the parishioners say "Go ahead anyway", the other four are undecided. R2x1 (4628)

x2 Hueybot, you make some good points. If ever the Bishop decides she needs a spokesman, you could apply for the job. Might have to clean up your language a bit tho :D

But I think what both you and the Bishop are missing, are the emotive issues that not only Cantabrians but people from further afield, have attached to the Cathedral. It has transcended bricks and mortar to become a symbol of the spirit of a city. In doing so it has also morally passed into public ownership. So the battle that is commencing are the rights of the legal owner (the Church, represented by Matthews) vs the rights of the public. A bit like the All Blacks jersey. It is physically owned by the RU, paid for by sponsors who retain the advertising rights, but the emotional rights are vested in the public.

I wonder if the departure of the highly respected Peter Beck was not the result of some political feud with Matthews? It must have been a difficult call for a career churchman such as Beck to step down and enter into the secular world ...

1263580 2012-03-07 19:39:00 What's the current status on the Catholic Cathedral. It seems to have been forgotten with all the fuss from what seems a vocal minority over the Anglican one..?? paulw (1826)
