1263428 2012-03-06 23:52:00 Jesus Christ, $27 an hour and loads of available overtime, for someone out of work and with a family to support thats as good as winning lotto.

The role of the union is to negotiate the best deal possible, they failed to recognise when they reached this point and have now manourverd their members into unemployment.

I think the 90 grand a year some of them were earning would be the preferred state.

1263429 2012-03-07 00:09:00 Did you see the vote. 35% support the sacked workers and 65% the port. That says it all.
:)
John Banks got a majority vote from his electorate, that says a bit too. The same electorate stuck Rodney Hyde in , that says a bit about the value of local votes in that neighbourhood.

1263430 2012-03-07 00:22:00 Would you be happy with your guaranteed 40 hours work being spread out across 7 days ??
or have an 8 hour day, 4 in the morning, 4 much later in the afternoon/evening ?? ( a big gap in the middle of the work day)

Who cares? I do non-standard hours. Plenty of people do shifts like that you know - how about milkers?

Where is the link to this $27 an hourr they get?

1263431 2012-03-07 00:40:00 Well ya striking commies it had to happen. Lets bust the last militant union here like the Iron Lady bust the commie Englander miners.
I bet some of them come sniveling back to apply for jobs at the contractors, please God contractors dont hire any of them.

1263434 2012-03-07 01:27:00 There's lied, dammed lies, then there's statistics.

I imagine the selective figures quoted by both sides of this bunfight would have the statisticians gasping with envy.

Its in a piece where the union are trying to say how hard they actually have it .

The new POAL fact sheet claims the average salary is $91,000 but does not say what hours are needed to earn this amount of money – it is clear many hours are needed at the rate of $27 per hour including many shifts and overtime hours .

The article itself

I'm afraid they failed to convince me, Port work has been the holy grail for manual labourers for decades, Light work, high pay .

1263437 2012-03-07 02:55:00 As I said in another post about a guy here who worked at the Port Of Napier years ago, use to skit how he would turn up for work at 8am and get sent home again because there was no work for him that day and get 8hrs pay for doing nothing.
