1262623 2012-03-02 01:28:00 Major banks here: (EG: Lloyds, Barclays), gasoline (BPR. Shell, Mobil), landholders, major corporations (Fresh N Easy) others are all major players here - all Brit.

There's a lot of others, not including land holders and building owners.

1262624 2012-03-02 03:26:00 Is this all just a worldwide adjustment, bringing everyones standard of living more towards the worldwide average?? (ie b8gger all)

No.
Because the very rich are getting richer, the gap is getting bigger.

Just the poor getting poorer and the in betweens getting poorer.

1262625 2012-03-02 06:29:00 I like the analysis of judging a societies wealth on that of the poorest members.

Probably if we concentrated on lifting the poorest (and teaching them the basics to stop them flushing every dollar down the pokies) we may well have a far better society, albeit with lower levels of wealth for most of us as a result.

We spend too much time focusing on those with the most, when really they don't matter a toss. Those who are struggling are much more worthy of our attention.

There's a lot to be said for socialism.

However, they shouldn't be handed money for just sitting on their a#$es as happens now. All capable people should be doing SOME work somewhere to support their community, even if the work is little more than washing the road dust off the road signs with a bucket and sponge. It all counts, and it all works towards elevating the standards of life for all of us.

1262626 2012-03-02 07:38:00 This next 'election' will send everything into a tailspin since the divisiveness and hate across the aisles in congress will not let up. Intelligent persons (at other times) are making amazingly stupid decisions from the highest levels.

I don't see it getting any better and seriously, I see it as DOA no matter what 'politicians' try to do; it's all gridlocked and nobody's blinking. All the trench dwellers are in survival mode and there is little or no concern about the big picture any more.

One of the biggest owners of the US is Britain.
I see the poms finally finished paying off the WWII loans a while ago but I am surprised the poms own so much in the USA. I always thought Mobil was a yankee firm.

Yeah - that's kinda a shock to most Uhmerikans too - the uneducated ones. It's thought that the Chinese and Japanese investments in the US are very high - they are indeed high, but factored into the whole pix, not as high as feared.

I'll see if I can find (Google-up) a comprehensive list of UK-investments in the US - so far it has been hard to find in list form.

Sidebar: I see that Justine Bieber just turned 18 yo - and now he's officially too old to listen to his own music.

1262628 2012-03-02 20:38:00 America has been doomed ever since the war of independence, they rejected the monarchy yet have been trying to get it back ever since. If they sack all there politicians and put the Queen back on top all will be fixed :illogical

I would hardly hold the Disunited Kingdom up as a shiny example of an economic powerhouse..

They did try to put the Sovereign on top, but apparently burning at the stake is not encouraged any more ;)

Well said - it is only Edward 1 propaganda to call it the United Kingdom anyway. It never was and never will be united - the Scots are still trying to get out of the "United Kingdom". I suspect the Welsh have been stuffed for centuries, but I notice that the independence movement in Cornwall is now starting to flex its muscles once more!

1262632 2012-03-02 22:16:00 SJ, what we are watching now is the inevitable consequence of an economic system based upon out of control capitalism. I am not saying that communism would have been any better, just that capitalism depends upon having few winners and a multitude of losers. What is happening now is that the middle class is more clearly joining the working classes in the loser category, after a couple of centuries of respite from the greed of the overlords.

A couple of times recently, when watching some of the more egregious examples of American political and economic behaviour on the tv news, SWMBO has murmured "The decline and fall of the American empire"...
