1286559 2012-07-07 02:15:00 Found this in a box of odd cables, not sure what it is.

Plugs into the microphone jack and the led goes. If plugged into any other jack, the led doesnt work

I am guessing is an IR receiver? If so, for what?

1286560 2012-07-07 02:20:00 Looks similar to this - an IR blaster (www.engadget.com). Some info about what it may do (en.community.dell.com). And this
(en.wikipedia.org)
From the first link:

A blaster is basically an IR emitter attached via a wire directly to the controlled device. This way you can place the emitter directly in front of the device you're controlling in an attempt to ensure nothing gets in the way. IR blasters work pretty good as long as they stay in place -- especially if you install a shield that blocks stray IR signals -- but still don't overcome IR's one way nature. And of course the controlling device must be programmed to send the appropriate IR signals and timings.

You didnt have some kind of tuner (leadtek tuners had something similar for their remotes). You plugged it into the tuner input (for the remote)

1286561 2012-07-07 02:44:00 No... it was just by itself in the box along with a Windows media remote... but no cards or anything

Might have to look around at work and see what it attached to

1286562 2012-07-07 02:46:00 If you have a pc with windows media centre on it plug it in then use the remote. See if it works Speedy Gonzales (78)
1286563 2012-07-07 09:27:00 Had something like this for a tv card I had, it lets you use a remote control when you have a card fitted in the rear of your PC. So I guess it may be a remote control reciever that actually plugs into a card, not your mic or speaker outlet. Newteach (4990)
1286564 2012-07-07 09:44:00 There should be a USB receiver came with your remote that has a 3.5mm IR blaster port. either that or your tv card has the port Greven (91)
1286565 2012-07-07 10:20:00 It most likely will be off an AV sender (if it's a transmitter) or TV tuner (if it's a receiver) The Error Guy (14052)
1286566 2012-07-07 13:04:00 It will be the receiver for the remote. The 3.5mm plug will go into the tuner card.

The LED would light up when it's receiving commands from the remote.

Mic jacks supply +5v for the electret mic power, that's probably why it lights up if you put it in there.
