1285591 2012-07-03 09:05:00 I am looking at this, amongst others, as a main router for my UFB project. Anyone with experience of this router? Dickie has them at what seems like a very good price of $110. (Noel Leeming $250!!).

I don't need very high bandwidth or complex configurability. Just a good reliable set and forget workhorse.

Pretty good specs for that price but, as we know, depends on their reliability and whether they overheat etc.

1285592 2012-07-03 09:17:00 Have you got the modem?? Since it looks like this is just a router (not a modem//router). Here's one review. I think its the same router (www.pcmag.com). It looks like this can get warm Speedy Gonzales (78)
1285593 2012-07-03 09:57:00 Yes, that's the one. Surely they have learned their lesson with overheating, though??

Errr, note I said UFB project therefore no modem required. It's why I need a router to replace the adsl modem/router.

Looking to be the first cab off the rank for UFB in our street!! All the digging/laying is done but no sign of any RSP offers yet. I'm hoping that TC will get their a into gear soon.

1285594 2012-07-03 15:12:00 I'd go with the likes of a WRT54GL running Tomato or Gargoyle personally. Haven't trusted the Linksys gear as of late, which seems to be prone to overheating... Chilling_Silence (9)
1285595 2012-07-03 22:11:00 The WRT54GL is nice & reliable - I've had one for years now (run both Tomato & Gargoyle on it for years each, also), with zero problems. It's just that they aren't the fastest, given that they've been around for ages & only do 802.11g wireless & 10/100 ethernet. Personally, I'd love something similar that has gigabit ethernet & wireless-N, but haven't been able to decide whether spending the big bucks for some (approaching $300 in a few cases) is really worthwhile. The E3200 at $110 (especially since it runs DD-WRT) sounds like a deal worth trying - do they overheat to the point of crapping out (a problem I had with a D-Link DI524 ages ago), or do they just run warm? 1285596 2012-07-03 22:16:00 AFAIK after extended periods they actually kick the bucket.

Personally, I'm looking to buy one of these:

pbtech.co.nz

I'd hedge my bets on that one..

1285597 2012-07-04 00:17:00 That certainly looks a good spec and good price, Chill.

I am also wary of those flat sleek Linksys boxes but thought they must have learnt something since the WAG160N!

Thanks - it is on my radar.

1285598 2012-07-04 22:55:00 I just picked one up, writing up a blog on throwing Gargoyle on it, shouldn't be long :) Chilling_Silence (9)
