1262876 2012-03-03 22:51:00 Thinking of getting a bluebird of approx '93-96 vintage with an SR20DE or SR18DE engine

How fuel efficient are the engines?
what is the handling like?
So if anyone has one or if anyone knows anything about how reliable they are, any quirks to look out for, etc then please do comment away.

Or if you could recommend a better alternative...

1262882 2012-03-04 00:15:00 NZ assembled Bluebirds are a great choice - esp those with the Black Top engine :) Zippity (58)
1262883 2012-03-04 00:51:00 Oil squirters for the cams are quite small on the earlier SR motors which means if they have been poorly serviced they block up and cause problems. Alex B (15479)
1262884 2012-03-04 00:57:00 Plenty of parts for SR20's. Trademe and Pick a Part. I have owned/repaired Primera, Bluebird (U12/13), and now have a 93 Avenir. Only cause I know them well. Tons of info on the net for tuneups, (www.se-r.net) and SR20 forums (www.sr20forum.com) where I hang about. Distributors go on them - the cam angle sensor, after about 17 years. But cheap to replace either used or an aftermarket sensor. Also the tranny and bottom mounts perish easily. MAF needs a bit of cleaning. Waterpump (www.se-r.net) (pics) a pain to replace, since the mount and it's face plate has to be removed, and sometimes the power pump hoses/container. Starter motor and idle air regulator (www.se-r.net) also a pain to remove, since wedged underneath. But I think a sturdy engine. But recently piling up in wreckers, but engines pretty intact. I think the body styles are maybe not in fashion. So yeah ok Nissan Blubird, but for 93 be prepared for a few accessory parts repacement. The timing chain on mine has started to rattle, so will replace or remove it's guide soon.

SR20's, and the SR20DET for some reason have a cult loyal following in the United States for off road racing.
