| 28784 | 2001-12-27 09:12:00 | Since the reformat and reinstallation of Win98 and IE 5 I'm not able to save a webpage on to my desktop. In the Help files it says: 'If you did not install the Windows Desktop Update in Internet Explorer 4 before installing Internet Explorer 5, you must first uninstall Internet Explorer 5 to restore Internet Explorer 4. After you install the Windows Desktop Update in Internet Explorer 4, then you can reinstall Internet Explorer 5. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Click Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, and then click Add/Remove. Click Restore the previous version of Internet Explorer, and then click Ok. Restart your computer. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove. Click Add Windows Desktop Update from Web site.' I did all this right up to the Click IE 4, but in the Add/Remove Programs there is NO Internet Explorer 4 listed to add/remove. Ouch! Does anyone know what I should do now (apart from doing another reformat)? Thank you!! |

(I think, I'm not an expert. no ** by my name, perhaps someone else will reply with the technically correct answer. Maybe, maybe not. I don't work for PCW. Responding to this reply would be at your own risk. oh god, perhaps it would be better if I didn't reply at all) Goodluck. |

Actually I started to do that but chickened out and cancelled because I didn't want all my settings stuffed up after spending ages setting them. I was hoping someone could think of something easier... Come on guys, don't make me flounder around microsoft's site, you must know something. Pleeeze... |

| 28788 | 2001-12-28 08:01:00 | Thanks Terry and Graham (NOT unskilled & ignorant) for offering your help. I'm really pleased to report that I fixed it! All it was, was Tweak UI didn't have the check enabled in its 'Active Desktop enabled' option. After all that - I don't know how many times I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE 4&5, and I can nearly see through the Win98 disk after wearing it out searching for the install IE 4 option, LOL. Oh well, I've now got a VERY pretty desktop of a satellite pic of ChCh complete with homemade calendar for January 2002 in the top right hand corner. So useful, since Santa didn't give me a paper one this year. Oh well, waste of a good tree anyway! I'm really stoked that I solved it myself (for once!). Thanks for all the help offered all the same, it was appreciated. |
