28751 2001-12-27 08:48:00 Shelley Trotters thread(I hope she got the help she needed)raises a question...

How many people who come here don't realise that the people that they are talking to are not all PCW staff? can we please have some system to identify the credentials of users and their skill level?

I'd hate to offer advice to anyone and find that they relied on it as expert opinion!

28753 2001-12-27 09:20:00 Definition of an Expert:

X is an unknown quantity and a Spurt is a drip under pressure.

I've been using computers for 12 years, work in IT and both have, and am studying for, formal qualifications. This makes me an expert in some areas and not others(usually the ones I've had disasters in myself are the Expert areas!)

Different skill levels give different perspectives to a problem and sometimes the most correct technically is the least help.

Perhaps emphasize the 'or another reader' in the intro?

28754 2001-12-27 09:49:00 Nice idea, but who's to say who's an expert or not? Does qualifications and training make someone an expert? If so, then I'm an absolute beginner, as I have absolutely no qualifications or training in regards to IT. But would I consider myself an expert? Probably not, but I would say almost. I've probably spent more time on the computer (both running it, and ripping it apart) in the past 13 or 14 years than I have spent sleeping - and I don't even work in the industry...

just a side, I don't work anywhere, so if there's anybody out there in the IT community looking for an 'almost-expert' in some areas, I'm available! :)

Perhaps a rating scale that's set by other users for each user... through voting or such might be a good way to determine who's an 'expert'. Just a suggestion.

28755 2001-12-27 09:51:00 Dunno about you Inglewood man but if I started waving my credentials around on web sites my wife would have a fit!

My expertise stems from 37 years in electronics plus 8 years of computer knowledge, partially self-taught but much contributed by the kindness and generosity of friends much more skilled than I, plus regular infusions from the Press F1 team..

Most contributors to press F1 stick to their knitting and if their advice strays there is always another kind soul to add a correction.

What more could we ask?

Billy *<8-{)

PS. I am not Robo and challenge all other contributors to not be Robo too. One Robo is quite enough, just ask Mrs Robo, I'm sure she will confirm! (Perhaps Robo is really Mrs Robo? if so maybe Robo is one of the Anon brothers. Rambling now, holiday hysteria has got the better of me, gotta exit, good side losing control, darkness creeping, bits mixing with bytes, ram unwinding, brain overclocked, help me SY Aaaaaargh!

tis the problem of open forums. a least this site dosn't suffer the fate a few of my other regular haunts have with **** fights and bannings on an almost regular bases.

while on the subject, would anyone care for semi regular 'news' ie updates on products, drivers, sicurity etc ??

28758 2001-12-27 12:18:00 Iam sure that most newbies would appreciate help in identifying PCW staffers!I was under the impression that one regular poster was 'on the team'.Regular visitors known to be reliable could perhaps be encouraged by PCW to add an * or two to their names. Guest (0)
28759 2001-12-27 19:42:00 C'mon you lot, you are not paid to sit around chatting allday.

Anybody who can 'technically correct' answer either of the modem questions a couple of postings above, will get a week off on full pay. (since it's Xmas).

Keep knocking those zero's off the list.

28760 2001-12-28 03:45:00 I Have An Idea About How To determine Who Is An Expert The Nz PCworld Team Make A test And Get People To Take It And If they pass they Make A Lis And Put The People Who Passed Name And Email Address
in the list so people can determine who to take advise from i think this might be a good idea
