28741 2001-12-27 03:15:00 Hello,

I'm in a bit of a predicament. I've tried upgrading our old 4mb STB Velocity AGP graphics card to a 16mb Asus v3800 pure card. The problem is when I go to start the computer up (after installing the new card) the computer beeps three times (when usually it beeps once) and nothing is displayed on the monitor. I've tried installing this thing numerous times now and have even updated the bios. Our motherboard is a Pentium II Lx if that helps... I am totally at a loss as to what is happening - or should I say not happening.

My other question is about RAM. Can you install RAM of different speeds into one computer? Say, one that is 66MHz and one that is 133MHz?

Thanks for reading and/or replying.

Sincerely,

Matt Scheurich

28742 2001-12-27 03:26:00 Those beep codes are there to tell you something is wrong with the startup process. Since it was linked to your graphics card it may be that you haven't seated it properly. The card is faulty. Or other problems known with that card and that board.

About the memory. You can run different speeds on the computer as long as the Front Side Bus speed doesn't exceed the slowest RAM. So if you've got PC100 RAM you can run it on any machine higher that has a FSB of 100 and less. If you run it on a FSB of 133 you risk damaging your RAM but it does work but for how long is the question?

28743 2001-12-27 08:59:00 Hi Matt

I'm no expert in this area but I seem to recall that you have to set your video drivers to generic VGA before removing the old card so that the new card can be recognised and operate. Once booted you can then install the new drivers and set up the card to operate with them.

At the moment it sounds like your computer can't recognise the new card so responds as if there were no video card present at all. In the absence of a video card, a computer won't boot.

Cheers
