28866 2001-12-28 04:13:00 Im occasionally sent emails from someone who disguises their real identity and want to know 1 - how they do it, 2 - how to find their true identity.
Today, I looked at one today , with a user name of sooty, but when I right click on the name 'sooty', then looked at the identities, they manage to sign themselves with someone@microsoft.com

Another identy is sending me viruses, disguised at pictures, with a displayed user name of Amanda, but their true identity shows up as 12-mta@mta.co.nz (mta being Motor Trade Assoc)

Thanks for any support

28867 2001-12-28 04:59:00 One way is to have *very bad* security on a Web server. Thi allows people to redirect email through that site, so it appears as the source.

If you are getting viruses from the MTA site, an email to postmaster@mta.co.nz with details might get results, and lead them to fix their system.

As for microsoft.com ... they're wellknown for their security awareness aren't they?

28868 2001-12-28 05:41:00 There was a program on the net Ghost Mailer - Albert Yale but it'll take a while finding which was good for disguising keeping anonymous.

The only way you can tell who sent it is by their IP Address unless that too has been spoofed or they used an anonymiser, it is also possible to route your e-mail through multiple mailers making it harder to trace the mail.

Xtra's Webmail allows you to view full headers by logging in | Options | Mailbox | Message Headers | Full.

I haven't used Outlook/Express but they have that option too. I think it's called Remote Mail or just Message Header.
