2001-12-30 22:43:00 | The process is moving forward only as I can afford it, but so far I have six new dual Athlon XP motherboards, each with a pair of 1.4-GHz processors, a gigabyte of DDR RAM for each machine, and a total of 24 network adapter cards. These will all plug into a 24-port 10/100 network switch to create a flat network neighborhood. While my supercomputer won't be quite as fast as KLAT2, it will be a lot smaller and cheaper at right around 24 gigaflops, which is comparable to a top-of-the-line Cray T90 supercomputer from 1998. And while that Cray cost millions, my out-of-pocket supercomputer budget is $6,000. www.pbs.org

2001-12-30 23:46:00 | Tweak'e Are you straight up? Have you really done this? What on earth for? Loading word documents fast can't be the reason. Every time I get a new PC, I think about what wonders I could achieve with it. Usually the wonder is running the latest version of Office and it's pompous animated paperclip. I am jealous if this is real. robo.

2001-12-31 00:21:00 | The main problem with six dual processor motherboards is that if your are going to run Windows, then the system will crash 12 times as often:) What sort of number crunching are you doing Tweak'e?

2001-12-31 00:58:00 | Hogwash, a cluster of W2K servers running on that lot would be **** hot. I could convert a 2 hour DIVX to MPEG1 in a mere 20 minutes on that baby. It's good, but not $6000USD good however. :)

2001-12-31 02:48:00 | Gee, look how fast my computer waits for me to press the next key! | Guest (0) | |
