29117 2001-12-30 03:46:00 I have just bought a headset and plugged it into the sound card. (The headset has red and blue plugs which I plugged into the same colour sockets on the card)

The mike works but the earphones don't.
I get sound out of the speakers ok.
Have I got a dud set or is there something I can do?

29118 2001-12-30 04:09:00 Will the headphones work on another appliance? Stereo, portable cassette deck, microwave? (...OK, perhaps not the last one)

Alternatively, double check the socket you plugged into - perhaps try the other ones.

Also, double click the speaker icon in your task bar and check that nothing is set to mute and that volumes are high enough.

29119 2001-12-30 04:35:00 Yeah good point Heather...
(except I haven't been able to pick up the Rock on the microwave yet ??)

especially try the socket the speakers are plugged into..

29120 2001-12-30 04:57:00 Thanks Heather
Good idea - they work on the radio-cassette player.
(Not so good on fridge and washing machine.)
No other spare sockets on PC. Speaker icon settings all ok.
What else?

29121 2001-12-30 07:04:00 Well, it sounds like the headphones themselves are working (but perhaps you should get the fridge and washing machine checked). If you're 110% certain you've plugged it in the right hole - check that it's firmly in (not partly out).

Next I guess it's check sound drivers. Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Make sure that there are no exclamation marks beside anything.

Other than that all I can think of is go back to the speaker icon, double click it, go Options, Properties and see if all controls are displayed and appropriate ones checked. Also check that it's on full volume.

What program were you using to output the sound? Is that on full volume and does it have it's own mute?

29122 2001-12-30 21:50:00 HI Sally,

Just thought, have you tried plugging in the headphones and NOT the mike? Sometimes sound won't work properly if the speakers AND mike are being used at the same time.

29123 2001-12-31 04:01:00 I have recently pulled a PCI sound card and put in an old ISA one, because I can't be bothered with yet another power cord for amplified speakers. I could not hear anything on plain speakers.

These modern 'improved' sound cards give a very low output to the 'Speaker' socket, only suitable for amplified speakers.

Headphones (especially small ones) are very inefficient.

Listen very hard, with the output volume at maximum.
