| 29117 | 2001-12-30 03:46:00 | I have just bought a headset and plugged it into the sound card. (The headset has red and blue plugs which I plugged into the same colour sockets on the card) The mike works but the earphones don't. I get sound out of the speakers ok. Have I got a dud set or is there something I can do? |

(...OK, perhaps not the last one) Alternatively, double check the socket you plugged into - perhaps try the other ones. Also, double click the speaker icon in your task bar and check that nothing is set to mute and that volumes are high enough. |

If you're 110% certain you've plugged it in the right hole - check that it's firmly in (not partly out). Next I guess it's check sound drivers. Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Make sure that there are no exclamation marks beside anything. Other than that all I can think of is go back to the speaker icon, double click it, go Options, Properties and see if all controls are displayed and appropriate ones checked. Also check that it's on full volume. What program were you using to output the sound? Is that on full volume and does it have it's own mute? |

| 29123 | 2001-12-31 04:01:00 | I have recently pulled a PCI sound card and put in an old ISA one, because I can't be bothered with yet another power cord for amplified speakers. I could not hear anything on plain speakers. These modern 'improved' sound cards give a very low output to the 'Speaker' socket, only suitable for amplified speakers. Headphones (especially small ones) are very inefficient. Listen very hard, with the output volume at maximum. |
