29055 2001-12-29 19:31:00 We have a 14 gig .215 ram pc computer three months old , ME windows. It was showing via Pccillin that it had a trojan dlder virus in the Restore archive and in windows dlder .exe. After putting pccillin thru it , it appeared to delete the windows one cos it didnt show up the next time, when I rescanned it . However the other one did. I then took Pccillin off and put Nortons on. It didnt show up any viruses! Then I downloaded Tiny firewall and put that on.
1)
Now whats happened is that I dont know the proper settings for the firewall to let outlook express function properly , it just immediately shows 'the connection to the server has failed etc , I dont know whether I have caused this with the firewall (which I have now disabled)

2)I followed the letter in your latest PC mag which talks about trojan in REstore in ME windows and disabled that . Then I put Nortons back on and nothing showed. Then I took Nortons off and put PCCilin back on and ran that and nothing showed, then I re abled Restore and ran PCcillin and still nothing showed , so do I assume these viruses are now gone?

3)When I turn the computer on when the desk top is showing it immediatedy comes up with attempting to connect to the net, and a sign Explorer has caused aaan error in explorer.exe, explorer will now close. And behind it appears to be a brief picture of the opening page of Adaptec direct Cd , which then quickly disappears as I click the mouse on the error sign.

I hope this all makes sense and that you can help

Thanks John

29056 2001-12-29 19:46:00 Hi John,

You say your computer is only 3 months old. It should therefore still be under warranty, so if you ask nicely, they may be able to get it working properly again (some won't if it was a virus that caused the problems, but you never know if you don't ask!)

Good luck

Mike.

29057 2001-12-29 22:59:00 why install then remove the a/v progs. thats a waste of bandwidth updateing each one each time......you did update them didn't you ??

a/v progs don't always pick up or delete trojens. try a trail version of a trojen cleaner.

tiny firewall is very good but not so easy to use. try zonealarm.
