29058 2001-12-29 17:59:00 Even between Xmas and NooYear, I get the feeling F1 will still be quicker than trying to locate the reference in MS Help!

Running WinME. After an OS refresh, rehabilitated all the essential stuff and have got down to the 'nice-to-haves,' like the reserve dial-up internet account (Zfree). (My main account is Saturn cable).

When I set up the Zfree account, it tries to get me to dial up whenever I open a browser, tho' the cable connection is there and fully functioning. Netscape (6.2) will let me click 'cancel,' and falls back to the cable, but IE (5.5) gives me only 'connect' and 'work offline' options. The latter does not see the cable.

The two coexisted perfectly well when I first set them up; it's only since this latest OS refresh that dial-up tries to pre-empt the connection.

There's got to be a simple answer to this one.

29059 2001-12-29 19:38:00 Hi Argus,

I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but it should.

Zfree is probably set up as your default dial-up connection, so you'll want to go and turn that off so that IE doesn't try to connect using that. I'm not sure how the cable connection works, but you may be able to somehow set that as the default.

Anyway, here's how to set Zfree to not be default.

From Start Menu, go to Settings > Dial-up Networking

Right-click on the Zfree connection and click Properties.

There should be 5 or 6 tabs across the top, click on the last tab (Dialing).

Right at the top of that window there should be a box that says 'This is the default Internet Connection:' with a check mark next to it. Make sure that check mark isn't there. If you want to leave Zfree as the default dial-up you could set it to 'Never dial a connection' which means you'd never get the dialogue to connect when you start your browser.

Alternatively, phone the Saturn helpdesk, because I'm sure they'll know how to set IE up properly to read the cable connection.

29060 2001-12-30 20:04:00 Thank you Mike. Since people have questioned here how they know they have helped, I thought I should tell you. You helped.

However, I had to work my way through some strange behaviours first.

When the Zfree connection was unchecked, it ceased to pre-empt over the cable. However, when I actually dialled it (with cable still connected), it got to the point when it should connect(after 'verifying user name and password') and then rebooted the system!

Has anyone else come across this, and can tell me what causes it?

I found a better solution was to leave the 'default connection' box checked, but check the radio-button below captioned 'do not dial any connection.'

Thanks for pointing me in the right general direction, anyway.

Also, while I had the 'default' Zfree connection box unchecked, I set up a second alternative; the $20/month Paradise dial-up account I had set up for our other PCs not attached to the cable. (If you dial into the cable account, Paradise charges you $1/hr, so it's cheaper to have a separate one - for when Zfree is congested.)

The Paradise dial-up account established itself as the default; I unchecked the box, and it dialled up fine, but when I next brought up Dial-up networking, Paradise had automatically re-established itself as default.

All very odd: but I've now let Zfree be the default connection and checked its 'do not dial any connection' button. That combination lets me dial up on both, but neither interferes with the cable.

Thanks again
Argus
