29182 2001-12-30 10:29:00 Have recently bought a compaq running XP. Was told my microtek C6 was combatable after downloading V2.6 drivers. 3 weeks on and numerous mail between microtek, compaq and HP have got us no where except frustrated. I want a good average priced scanner which will not interfere with the computer or my HP printer, any recommendations. I am now reluctant to revisit microtek. Guest (0)
29183 2001-12-30 12:55:00 stay away from Mustek too. Tek support is worse than a warm fish milkshake.

Id suggest Hp among others usually but in this situaltion u probably like the milkshake better.

Your safe with epson and in particular Cannon. Cannon's the go I think.

Id also suggest a SCSI drive one, but if speed dosnt bother u a simple USB will do sweet.

29185 2001-12-30 20:23:00 You also need to know that the better brand you go for the more expensive its going to cost you. Hp's are great (except for the pricing)if you're ok with it, but otherwise, why go for Epson or Canon? I'd definately go for the one that some people call 'cheap' but is definately not, their tech support is over the top, they're great and their spec. are the same as a lot of other model. Only thing is they're quite 'old' in size (meaning they're not as small as the modern ones) The brand is called Acer (which is well know) and the model is Acer 3300U Usb, which cost you 129+gst offering 1200dpi, or if that's not enough 2400dpi is Acer 5300U Usb which is 259+gst, which is a lot different to those HP, Epson... etc. ones, but never go for microtek or mustek like the other people said. The pricing above are current at a shop in AKL called Ace-Tech (specialising in Acer products -with Acer technicians on site), you could visit them at http://www.ace-tech.co.nz to find out more. If you have a membership there, you called always get things cheaper (discounts) all you have to do is spend more than $1000 with them for the past year and then you are elgible to apply. Again, more details at their website. I do remeber last time they had a special on for the 3300U model which was 109+gst. You could also have a look at these at Farmers or LCQ Computers which for both I'm not sure the pricing but around 150-160 mark including gst probably.

Happy scanning ;-)

29186 2001-12-30 20:39:00 Hi BD,
I have a Vuego 3300U scanner,
$175.00, easy to install, comes with Mirascan software.
Very good interface and again easy to use with a wide range of options. Never have any trouble with it. Check it out.

29187 2001-12-30 22:11:00 Hi BD.

Canon peripherals seem to be the best bet for finding something that will work first pop on an XP machine - Canon have been really good at updating all their drivers etc. and so you shouldn't have any trouble with getting one to work.

HP seem to be the slowest at updating their drivers, but they are coming along now.

29188 2001-12-30 22:37:00 When it comes to driver updates I would steer clear of HP. I spent over $1000 buying an officejet all in one from them just over 6 months ago, Xp gets released containing drivers for it with limited functionality.
Checked out the HP website only to find they will not be releasing any XP drivers themselves as they feel the included drivers with XP are sufficient. Hell I dont mind forking out that sort of money for limited functionality, not to mention the fact they havent released drivers for the M50 & 70 moniters for XP. I can not comment on their other products and driver support but going by my experiences it wont be good.

29189 2001-12-31 02:55:00 Modern 'intelligent' printers seem to need to talk back to the computer too much to make sharing the port a good idea. If the C6 works on the port on its own, you might be able to get an extra parallel card just for the scanner.

If you are going to buy another scanner, do not get a parallel port one. There's no point in looking for trouble.

SCSI is nice, USB is probably OK.

29190 2001-12-31 08:26:00 Can recommend the Canon N670u
Upgraded to one of these from a HP 5p and I cant believe how easy it is to use. Its a usb and works with win xp nicely. Microtek, HP and others need to look at canons software and learn some lessons.
