29551 2002-01-02 08:29:00 I have windows Me. I installed Ie6 when it first came out successfully. I had to reinstall Windows. I later found I was unable to reinstall IE6. In the mean time I had install MSN 7. I am wondering if this is responsible. To make things worse I don`t seem to be able to uninstall MsN 7.
I am wondering if this will cause problems when I finally upgrade to XP

29552 2002-01-03 01:29:00 when you reinstalled your windows was that after a reformat of your hard drive or was it straight over the top of your old windows?? I had exactly the same problem and was tearing my hair out till I was informed by someone with more knowledge...(most people) that because I reinstalled over the top of my old windowsME windows had carried over most of my settings and the new install thought I had ie6 already. I finally got ie6 to install by running the installation while connected to the net... dunno why but this helped but it still took several tries to install properly. As to upgrading to xp....why??? I suggest that you hold off for a while on the upgrade till the final analysis is out on xp...there seems to be a lot of mixed feelings out there about it at the moment plus a wise man/woman once said 'always wait for the second or third version of windows before upgrading....you cry less then'. 29553 2002-01-06 12:20:00 Dipstick 1's comments are correct. the onlyway to reinstall an operating system is to first reformat the drive prior to installation. This will remove any traces of the previous operating system.

In order to preserve your personal folders etc, a worthwhile investment is to use Partition Magic. This is a utilituy that first allows you to partition you HDD into two (or more) partitions. Move your personal folders (ie My Docs, Favorites, Email client address book to the newly created partition. Format the C partition (contains windows) Reinstall the operating system, and configure it, and import your data from the created partition.

Using this method you are able to do a fresh install of your OS and relevant software, and then re-import yourpersonal folders - avoiding loss of data
