29503 2002-01-02 01:54:00 I'm a relatively new user & have winXP I have'nt installed a firewall yet as i'm just learning about them! Can anyone tell me if there is any kind of basic firewall setup already on the system? and if installing e.g Zonealarm will interfere with my winmessenger video or any thing like that?In the last imag there was an article pg97 on disable file sharing however i had no joy from those directions?i know these are probably basic question but i hope somebody can bear with me & help!! Also i checked out the site Robert Hendersen spoke of & was pleased i did - as found that the patch from micrsoft that i was led to believe would help with the Upnp or what ever that major flaw was-had not stopped access through there which peeved me off -But i was able to do the one from that site!Wonder how many other people think that that patch was the answer!!
Love the magazine and think all u guys who share your expertise on this site are GREAT!! Also my question about any standard firewall was because on the test i spoke of the first part came back as i must have a stealth protection it was the ports i had no protection in in some cases!!

29504 2002-01-02 03:44:00 Beware of FUD surrounding the UPNP vulnerability. The built in firewall in XP plus a good virus scanner will be a fine solution to your needs.

Have a look at this link:

29505 2002-01-02 04:46:00 for a firewall you can use either the xp provided one or there are many others on the market... try zonealarm which is a good basic firewall and its free or if you want to go to better paid protection then there are many including zonealarmpro or the norton personal firewall or many others....most manufacturers have a free trial of their product so if you have trouble deciding then try them out yourself. 29506 2002-01-02 10:55:00 Big thanks to dr mayo & dipstick 01 for your responses-after alot of trying to work out where the firewall settings were!! - I found that my firwall was not activated!!I have come across this before - my partner & i both have computer admin accounts- however it is easy to forget the settings don't work for both accounts!!His account had its firewall activated but mine wasn't-i really thought a setting like that would follow through to both accounts!!Took me ages to find how to set mine though!!Also i found the site Dr Mayo provided most interesting!Anyway i deceided to do the leak test again after activating the firewall just to see how good the standard XP firewall was-What a difference it made!!All tests came back 'Stealth'- in other words my computer does'nt exist!! Before activating the firewall the ports were open in some cases when i tested!
Once again thank you both for your time and saving me installing another firewall needlessly!! P.S Do you think the firewall will affect my connection to windows messenger or netmeeting??or even i.c.q for that matter?? I deceided not to fiddle with the advanced settings just to be safe to start with but no doubt i will have to do that at some stage-probably sooner than later so any advice on those settings for MY system & above programs would be appreciated!!
Thanks again and happy new year to you both!!

29507 2002-01-03 00:38:00 as far as your firewall interfering with messenger e.t.c I dont think you will have a problem. on Zonealarm the first time you use a porgram like that, that you want to let use the net it asks you and you tick the box so it dosent ask you again. With messenger and file sharing programs it also asks you if you want to let the software act as a sever.

So in conclusion I dont think you will have a problem maybe you should look under the advanced settings or try and find a program list of somesort.
