29594 2002-01-02 21:19:00 Hi I'm looking at increasing the amount of RAM on my system. I currently have Win Me, I have heard there is a point were the system spends more time managing the memorey than actually utilising it, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks Guest (0)
29595 2002-01-02 22:01:00 as far as i know the max is 2gig. most motherboards can't take that much anyway. Guest (0)
29596 2002-01-02 22:39:00 You really have to determine just how much of your existing ram you are typically using. I have 320 only to discover my typical usage rarely uses more than 128 so I created a 100 meg ram drive with the excess. Win9x rarely uses more than 256. Too much RAM can slow the system down while the 'puter addresses all the RAM. I'm using Win98SE Guest (0)

29598 2002-01-02 23:58:00 i forgot to mention there is very little performance gain per $$$ once you go above 512. unless you are doing photo/film editing.

mark makes a good point. it all depends on how you use your comp. some people here use 512 ram + 600meg swapfile.

256ram is a good size for an average comp.

i havn't heard of anyone with pc slowing down (apart from vcache probs) with large ram but i doubt there are many people who have over 1gig ram.

29599 2002-01-03 00:16:00 Hi Nigel,

My PC came with 64MB, and after fitting a further 128MB I have 192MB.... I do a fair amount on my computer, and find that this is ample for my everyday needs. You could fit a 256MB, but if you are an everyday user, you may not need that much...

Regards, ALAN
