29838 2002-01-05 01:47:00 My monitor packed it in recently and I am now gratefully using a borrowed 17 inch monitor from a generous friend. I want to replace mine of course, but I want to go to a 19 inch model - it seems that most web sites are now designed for 1024 x 768 resolution and this is too small on a 17 inch monitor for my deterioring eyesight. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would like a reasonable quality and preferably as flat a screen as possible. I want to stay with a CRT as I'm not impressed with the current colour quality of LCD units (I do a lot of graphics stuff). Cost does matter but I don't mind paying a fair price for a good product. 29839 2002-01-05 04:32:00 Hello Ray,

The best value for money 19' monitors that I have seen around lately, are the Phillips 109S Lightframes, these are excellent monitors and are currently available for $780.00 GST inclusive (Auckland)there are several other makes around available for less than this, however I find with 19' screens it pays to stick with the better brands with longer warranties (3 years Phillips)

29840 2002-01-05 04:45:00 i like the sony 19' rrp 1999 inclu, very nice flat screen. however a veiwsonic 19' flat sceen would be a close second and cheaper. Guest (0)
29841 2002-01-05 04:53:00 mayby just me being in the tv trade i see heaps of dead philips :-( you will need a three year warranty with them. however most people don't hang on to a computer for 5+ years, the odds are you will upgrade before it goes. Guest (0)
29842 2002-01-05 05:11:00 I liked the Viewsonic 17' monitor (E771) that I passed on to my daughter when I upgraded my PC. It was easy on the eyes and had good colour although it was hardly 'flat'. Maybe the 19' models are better in this respect. Guest (0)
29843 2002-01-05 07:57:00 I have been using a Viewsonic GS790 for a year now and am wrapped with it. Before that I tried cheaper KTX, Proview and a something or other (can't remember what brand it was) and they were an absolute waste of time. The cheaper brands were probably marginally acceptable for the likes of email, word processing etc.(in short bursts) but absolutely useless for graphics, which I do a lot of. The Viewsonic, for the money I paid ($1300 I think and are probably a lot cheaper now) is great. My father has a Philips Lightframe and I hate it. But it is probably a case of what one has become used to. Remember, that you can have the best computer around but if the monitor you are using is not up to scratch your computing experience will be less than enjoyable, don't skimp. Also consider your graphics card will it support a good picture on a 19'.

29844 2002-01-05 09:26:00 you're right tweak'e....I was in the tv etc installation business and there are 2 types of phillips tv's....the ones made in holland are great and seem to have very few probs but the others that are made in a nameless asian country are the complete opposite....this was told to me by an ex phillips employee.....gladly this does not apply to their monitors tho and they have a good reputation for a reason. I just brought my system 4 months ago and got the 17' phillips monitor and have been very happy with it... several friends who have other brands have since gone and changed theirs over to phillips as well....best advice when looking for goods is find a salesman you like and seems to be fairly....note the fairly unbiased and then stick with him....everyone has a different opinion and you will end up getting so many conflicting points of view you end up spending the cash on a holiday instead.....I hear fiji is nice but that other bloke was saying go to new caledonia.....aaarrrggghhh Guest (0)
29845 2002-01-05 22:23:00 My machines graphics are a problem - they're on board with no upgradeability. The mobo (a pcchips M741LMRT) supports 64bit 3D agp2 graphics up to 1600 x 1200 res but i don't know the refresh rate options. I want to run in 1024 x 768 32 bit mode so I'm hoping this will suffice till I once again upgrade the box. I made a major booboo in buying cheap last time. Everything is on-board (sound, graphics, lan, ir port, modem) and there is only 1 expansion port (PCI), which seems to disable the graphics if anthing is plugged into it. So any sort of upgrade is going to have to be a new box.
I considered buying a new machine from PC Company just prior to Xmas but have been put off by the experience my dad has just had with a machine from them. Selling a new machine to a 74 year old with limited computer savvy is fine, but not with a brand-new operating system (XP) which seems to be incompatable with just about every periferal ever sold. Poor old dad's been driven mad trying to get everything working - which he couldn't. In the end we loaded W98 (all the disks that came with the PC only had W98 and W2k drivers - no XP driver software except on the password-protected recovery disk). Still it crashes - seems to have a hardware problem somewhere, but the PC Co techs just want to reload XP as a cure, so he's loathe to take it back as everything is working, just the odd intermittent crash. Hardly seems good customer care to me. But I digress (I tend to do that a lot) and that's a topic for another thread.
Thanx to all for your comments. I'll check out both the Philips and Veiwsonic options.
Cheers.

29846 2002-01-05 22:29:00 I was really after a Sony 19' but it was to expensive so I bought a KTX 19' and it was a piece of crap. I got rid of the KTX and bought a Viewsonic 19' G790 for about $1300 and its a ripper. Good colour, nice sharp text so the GS790 should be really similar and on that basis I would recommend you look at a Viewsonic. Guest (0)
29847 2002-01-08 01:11:00 dont take this the wrong way but I have used phillips monitors and they are crap the picture is very grainy and poor.

With 19' monitors you what you pay for I would recommend checking out the various hardware sites for monitor reviews. View sonic and samsung currently have had some good reviews with their 19' monitors
