29823 2002-01-05 00:10:00 Mandrake 8.0 as a dual boot.
Mandrake's install was allowed to set up the partition etc as it wished.

Worked fine for a while... Now, when I try to boot into Linux all I get is...

'Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03: 05'

Any ideas?

TIA
Paul

29824 2002-01-05 02:00:00 Well, that's actually a relatively clear error message. If you rememeber it will have told you that the '/root' partition was '/dev/hda5'.(/dev/hda4 is the extended partition and hda5, 6, 7, maybe 8 are the logical partitions used for linux.

/root contains the kernel code.

Somehow, either that partition , or the partition table has been corrupted.

Can you select the (?)Windows boot?

Have you tried booting up from the rescue disk? You might be able to restore the partition table with (linux)fdisk.

Have you been shutting down the linux properly? It is very important. I've found the easiest way is to ctrl/alt/del, which causes a shutdown and reboot. The reboot can be powered down.
