30066 2002-01-06 22:59:00 Greetings all PressF1-philes!

Hope everyone is over their New Year's hangover??

I'm the Online Campaign Director for IDG's websites (including PressF1), and just wanted to ask a couple of controversial questions about advertising on our sites from you, the punters.

1. Is the advertising on our sites useful for you (in general)?

2. What would you like to see more of? I notice that a lot of you ask about information on hardware and software... would advertising help with your decision-making?

3. Knowing that advertising helps keeps sites running and free, what types of advertising are acceptable and useful to you?

We want to ensure we're providing you with useful information both in editorial content and with the advertising, so any feedback regarding our sites is most useful.

Look forward to hearing from you guys.

Kind Regards

30067 2002-01-06 23:40:00 Most of us realise that advertising is a necessary evil abd I have found the ads on this site quite pleasant compared to other sites with their popups and flashing bits and peices... some have actually caused me to close the window and go elsewhere which sort of defeats the purpose of their ads in the first place. Yes the ads here are useful...I actually have clicked on a few of them.. I think that most people who come in here could benefit from ads that are for software manufacturers i.e symantec, microsoft, etc. Places where they can also look for help or solutions to their problems. How about advertising sites that are also helpful in problem solving?? Guest (0)
30068 2002-01-07 00:12:00 thanks for that dipstick01, it's good to get feedback so we can ensure we're not annoying you guys and do actually provide useful advertising.

I agree about software & hardware manufacturers & providers advertising more useful information - we're trying to encourage them to do so... after all, that's what will eventually lead you guys to buy their products!! ;-)

Cheers

30069 2002-01-07 00:28:00 one advertising i wouldn't mind seeing is adverts from WHOLESALERS. manfactures advertise, retailers advertise but very rarly do wholesalers advertise. i'm sure theres a few IT staff that would like that. :) Guest (0)
30070 2002-01-07 00:44:00 you're probably not likely to see wholesalers advertising all that often, tweak'e. Generally they have a retail channel that they have to use to sell their products to end users, so if they start advertising directly to end users, then that channel gets a tad ticked off and refuses to stock their products, etc. Retails like to mark-up wholesale products so they can make a 'margin' off selling them. By wholesalers going direct, this would be jeopardised. The reseller channel generally takes all the hassle out of promoting and selling a product that the wholesaler or manufacturer would normally have to do, allowing them to stick to what they do best.

check out Reseller.co.nz, to catch up on the latest from manufacturers, distributors and resellers.

30071 2002-01-07 01:16:00 Hi
1.I usually have a look at the ads, I like the Liquid.com with the bubbles, but don't visit the sites all that often.

2. I thinks any ads you can get revenue from would be OK with me

3. I get frustrated with the ads, as in the Melbourne Age site, that are set in the middle of an article, after a while you don't see them, but for some reason I tend to ignore them more than other ads that are set on the side, or top and bottom. Don't you dare put on popup ad pages ggrrr.

30072 2002-01-07 02:12:00 Hiya Kerry

The adverts, for the most part, are unobtrusive and relevant. As said in an earlier reply here, they are a neccessary evil ;)

I wonder however, why you bother with the right hand side advert? I only see a small part of it unless I scroll. I view IE6 at 800 x 600, and it doesnt show all the advert in this configuration.

30073 2002-01-07 02:42:00 Shouldn't have told him that Jester. People with big wide screens tend to forget that other people have fewer columns. I don't mind missing the ads at the RHS. (Or any ads).

But the ones which cause me to go elsewhere are those who FLASH the damn things. It might be very impressive when showing the new web page to senior management. It annoys me to the extent that I won't buy from the people.

As for bloody pages covering what I do want to see ...

30074 2002-01-07 04:29:00 No complaints here on the adds, the best part of the advertising here as it is unobtrusive.
Wouldn't mind seeing some add's from recruiting agencies (maybe around Oct-Jan) as that is when I graduate (IS Degree)as well as other students.

Maybe more computer componentry adds.
