30277	2002-01-08 08:52:00	Okay, I've been using Black Ice because it came on the PCW CD recently. It has run out on my main PC, and in that time it hasn't detected one single solitary sad attack. I don't want to buy it, it doesn't seem to do anything (except cause memory problems when I run Galactic Battlegrounds). What do you, my learned colleagues, recommend? (I've got the Nokia M1122 router on my ADSL connection and I think that does most of the firewall stuff, but my wife's PC still does do some suspect stuff on the network with nobody using it so I am not completely convinced I am safe). robo. 30280	2002-01-08 09:22:00	JM Why do you say that? I've seen some folks slagging Black Ice and mentioning that PCW seems to favour it. I'm a little skeptical about the need for firewalls, which is why I've taken so long to bother using one. (plus maybe some misguided faith in my M1122) I'm the true chic of geek. The genuine article. 30282	2002-01-08 09:49:00	That eccentric Steve Gibson of Spinrite fame reccommends ZoneAlarm. The free version, no less. So that's what I use and since it's been running on this PC, I haven't had a single successful Trojan attack. Nor have there been any elephants in my office since then, so I'm certain it's been keeping them at bay as well. I have monitored many blocked attempts at intrusion though, sometimes as many at 70 in a single day. (ASDL, PCI card cheapo installation with in-line filters) Outlook is open basically 24/7 so I figure it's prudent to attempt to block possible intruders. Backtracking the web addresses has led me to some highly unsavoury sites complete with nasty ActiveX scripts, so I don't reccommend that course of action unless you're really sure you know what you're doing. I don't so... But I digress. ZoneAlarm personal edition works for me and the price, as they say, is right. ;-)	Guest (0)

30284	2002-01-08 10:57:00	Definatly zonealarm...its had constant good reviews and seems to be respected and solid...I was using it for a few months before I found the OEM version of norton personal firewall on my manufacturers cd so have that running and will go back to zonealarm when this dies. The only advantage this has over ZA is norton tells you what sort of port scan has been attempted...very handy in sorting out the threats from the noise. The best thing about ZA tho is it tells you what programs are acessing the net...I wish norton had that too.	Guest (0)
30285	2002-01-08 12:00:00	Blackice when I was running it seemed to detect nothing if you ran another firewall alongside, I did that quite a few times when I was playing around with other firewalls and there settings etc, if your modem has its own firewall then that might be why blackice is so quiet, also what have you got it set at will depend on what it blocks. Worked very good on our various systems, even a 2yr could work it but it did not like our internal nokia modem. We now use ZA pro which is almost as easy as Blackice was.	Guest (0)
30286	2002-01-08 12:27:00	ZoneAlarm is the one for me and as said before Steve Gibson reckons it is the best. Just the other day a couple that have their PC's networked were having a few problems and as it happened they had a virus which their anti-virus program had not picked up but ZoneAlarm caught it trying to access the net.
