30264 2002-01-08 07:56:00 We have 7pcs connected via a 10baseT hub and network interface cards to a server with fast ethernet card [100mbps] o a peer to peer network
will replacing the hub only with a dual-speed 10/100 Ethernet switch improve network performance at all or will I have to replace the 7 NIC's as well?

30265 2002-01-08 08:13:00 If I understand correctly replacing the hub will not improve the 10Mbits NICs that are on your PC so there won't be much gain at all they will still work at 10Mbits. Guest (0)
30266 2002-01-08 08:47:00 mmmm test time lets see if i get this right IT dudes :-)

with a hub when A sends data to B the data gets sent to all ports but only B accepts it. a switch will send the data from A to only B. a hub tends to flood the network expecialy when you have lots of pc's. a switch is more efficient hence improved network performance when you have a lot of pc's connected. thou 10/100 nic plus the switch would be sweet as ;-)

i hope thats correct.

30267 2002-01-08 09:48:00 I started with a hub at home and changed to a switch after a year and noticed a large speed boost from using it as well as the whole network appearing to be much more stable. I would expect you would notice quite a difference as well. Guest (0)
30268 2002-01-09 03:08:00 A Switch is always better than the same speed hub, however all network transmissions only operate at the speed of the slowest component, so if all NIC's are only 10MBit/s, then that will be the network speed.

Upgrading to 10/100 NIC's will give a huge speed boost to the network.
