| 30665 | 2002-01-10 14:03:00 | Can anyone point me in the right direction? I want to use Nt Backup to backup to other than a tape device. At present I am using robocopy which is fine for datafiles. I have approx 20gb of backup to do and my tapes are only 4gb. Also be nice to backup shares etc. Can I use NT backup or do I need 3rd party software? regards Don |

It might anyway, I don't know. I really like Backup Exec, and it doesn't have to be expensive. I have heard rumours that EZ CD Creator can do backups to disc as well, but this I do not know for sure. Regards, robo. |

A DVD writer -- might be a cheaper way to get 4GB or so, in a year or so, when the drives come down in price. You could go to DLT tapes for 20-30GB per tape. This is fairly expensive, and will remain so. You could get some plugin drives and backup to them. That would be expensive for media, but fairly fast. Comes down to how much money you've got, and how much the data are worth. But 20Gb backups are going to cost some minumum amount per byte. |

| 30668 | 2002-01-12 11:04:00 | Thanks for the feedback folks. I always try to be brief and so miss out bits. I run a NT4 network with 4 servers, but have only 1 tape drive on the PDC. I use the tapes to backup for offsite purposes and regular backups of system and local reg of the PDC. The problem with tapes is if it takes 2.5hrs to make a tape, it also takes 2.5hrs to catalogue it if you want to retrieve a particular file. Because of this I do daily, weekly and monthly backups to several large HDD's on dedicated machines using robocopy (NT utility)via batch files. This gives me instant access. The only problem with this is that it does not copy the shares. Seems to copy the security info tho'. The other problem of course is the amount of Data I have to backup. I am toying with the idea of using a large removable HDD to do backups but need advice as to how to copy the info from the 3 main servers, conserving security and share info.. if it can be done? |
