30655 2002-01-10 13:06:00 It's happened finally, she who controls the purse strings has agreed to me getting Jetstart (something about me tying up the phoneline in excess of 350 to 500 hrs a month). So I need a modem. I know the Nokia M1122 is the way to go just out of the budget at the moment, I can get a Nokia NI500 for about $280 all up or a Dynalink Modem/Router for around $350. My needs include sharing between 3 computer (set up on a hub at the moment) one is running XP/ME dualboot, one is ME soley and one is 98/linux dual boot. 2 are p2 450's and one is a p3 933. I have heard that some modems will get pinged off by cordless phones and internals are more trouble than they are worth.
Some opinions would be greatly received.

30656 2002-01-10 20:12:00 I guess some of you think I get paid by Nokia for my talk about the m1122, but I only rent it from Telecom.
It is the ethernet hub/router thing that makes me like it.
No mucking around with DUN.

Otherwise, had success with Dynalink and D-Link. Just make sure you use the latest drivers and get local configs before you start.

If you've got three pcs, I reckon you should go the router paradigm. Not sure brand matters much.

Is renting an option? $20 per month is livable, and you can replace it any time you like after the first year.

30657 2002-01-10 20:31:00 I have to agree with Robo the Nokia M1122 is a beauty. Easy to setup. I also rent my from Telecom, however Telecom no longer offer this service. You could always look to lease the modem. I use these guys for all of my leasing of computer gear www.acquire.co.nz Guest (0)

I'm a confirmed devotee of the Ni500, I think it's a little gem!

I started with a 3Com ADSL modem and got embroiled in PPOA problems, dropped connections and various other hassles. Since I bought the Ni500 I've never once dropped a connection and it is 100% reliable. Speed is extraordinary and very consistent, though I am within 2Km of the exchange which does help. Even slow sites work well.

From Robo's recent firewall debate it seems that having a router adds security benefits as well. I'd go for the Ni500 for value for money.

Cheers

30659 2002-01-11 01:07:00 Brand may/may not matter... but something to keep in mind is that all of Telecoms $1,000,000 exchanges are supplied by Nokia... so at least with a Nokia modem you have a better guarantee of compatability. Guest (0)
30660 2002-01-11 10:51:00 Hi Tazzie, for sure the nokia M1122 is the best for the price(you can go better for around $1000 with a Cisco, but lets not get silly). The other option is perhaps an Alcatel( pro or such),not sure on price, but very good.If you are more than 3.5-4ks from beware of the NI500.It has a problem with dropouts.Apatr fro that the Dynalink externals are OK.
Hope this helps

30662 2002-01-14 05:16:00 Responding to Peter Coleman's post, what's this about Nokia Ni500 routers suffering from drop-outs? I have never experienced this problem on my router and have enjoyed 9 months of 100% up-time. I therefore wonder if it is a line quality/hardware issue for some users.

Is there a site where hard facts can be found or is this just a perception that some users have? Certainly I have only once before seen a comment about Ni500 drop-outs on Press F1 and that was just last week.

Could this possibly be a case of chinese whispers?

Cheers
