1288165 2012-07-13 03:19:00 I know Im waisting time with old rubbish but I was asked to do it...
I need to get wifi working on an old Win 2000 PC. I cant run a network cable to this PC

I know I'll have to try & find a Win2k compatable card 1st but..
Will win2k even support WPA2 ??, or any wifi security??
I guess I'll need 3rd party software to replace WinZeroConfig that wont be in Win2k

Cheers

edit:
Ive found an old wifi card I tried has both 2k software & drivers.
So it looks like its do-able.

Win2k supports wifi. Not wpa, only wep. Had a look online, and it looks like you can get wpa on a win2k pc. Read this for more on that. (www.wirelessforums.org)

1288167 2012-07-13 03:52:00 I've had Windows 2000 on our WPA2 network just fine. That said, I did have to use the crappy software that came with the card, but it worked. pcuser42 (130)
1288168 2012-07-13 04:38:00 I just looked up my dealer site and see a d-link PCI adapter that supports WIn 2k and also a Netcomm USB wireless adapter that contains Win 2k drivers, so I dont think it will be to hard to find one that supports Win 2k. As long as it is Win 2k SP4 by the looks of it. USB one is a lot cheaper.

Oh, just saw your edit, good luck 1101, hope it works.

1288169 2012-07-14 01:22:00 Yeah .. we had a old laptop (P3 600Mhz) with a wifi card that came with win2k drivers, with SP4 Win2k, we had it running for a couple of years. Then we upgraded to WinXP only a couple of months ago, should have done that long time ago. Wifi is so much more stable under XP.

We had issues of times that the computer didn't connect to other computers but it could surf the net ok and other computers couldn't access the win2k computer.

We got WPA2 running ... on Win2k and XP. We had a PCMCIA ASUS Wifi card. We used the ASUS software. Could not remember if Win2k had its own Wifi software.
