1287866 2012-07-11 22:06:00 Hi,
I need to buy a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for a new computer and would like to know the difference between the retail version and the OEM version. Apart from the OEM version being only 64 or 32 bit is there any other important things to know?

Thanks

The other difference is price, retail costs more.

OEM is tied to that particular PC too, well according to Microsofts rules, PC des, throw out the OEM copy of Windows with it.

The differences are listed here:

1287869 2012-07-11 22:17:00 Nothing. OEM maybe cheaper than the retail version. And depending on where you get the OEM version, you may or may not have to buy some hardware. It doesnt matter what the hardware is Speedy Gonzales (78)
1287870 2012-07-11 22:34:00 OEM technically you're not entitled to any free support from Microsoft - that's up to your OEM provider. But when was the last time anyone rung Microsoft for support? inphinity (7274)
1287871 2012-07-11 23:09:00 Yeah what everyone else said, OEM belongs with the PC it's bundled with and must be kept with the original hardware (In theory at least, if you have a motherboard failure or something and ring microsoft they'll issue a new key in most cases).
Retail is a single copy licensed to the user and can be transferred to a new machine as long as it's uninstalled from the old one first.

I always buy the OEM version and when I sell my old hardware I sell windows with it and get a new copy for the new machine. PC's sell much better as complete running machines in my experience so it adds value in that respect. I do get left with orphan software though, I have an OEM version of 64bit XP pro and an upgrade edition of Vista 32bit floating around home somewhere which are of no use to me and impossible to sell.
