If youre using windows 7, install MSE. You dont need a firewall |

Also most home users connect to the internet these days via an ADSL Router, the NAT on the router is generally good enough at stopping outside things from getting in. |

Pretty much as speedy and chill said, you connect via a router or NAT which has a firewall built in and windows also has a built in firewall. Anything that gets past those is probably pretty malicious and would be likely to get through any paid solution just as well, that being said most attacks like that would be aimed at exploiting servers or corporate networks. Not so much john doe's PC any more. |

Well the way that NAT works, it's not so much a firewall, nor does it "act as one", but it achieves the same thing most people want: Stopping things from the outside coming in |

"Avast" is another free one. Some members dislike it, but I have found it OK. A bit intrusive at times.
