1286862 2012-07-10 00:22:00 And people say I'm biased

I have no problem with people suggesting windows laptops if they can actually explain why they would be better and the OP says "Oh ok" or "I'll consider them" or whatever. Until then people should probably stick to answering the question dont you think? It also doesn't help that the people who are saying stuff like

Get a Windows 7 based laptop, makes life easier.

Probably haven't even used a latest generation Mac for more than about 1 minute. Surely if the OP is asking for advice purchasing a Mac only people who currently own and use macs, deal with them on a regular basis or can genuinely say they have an extensive knowledge about them should be answering the question instead of people who are going to be ignorant haters?

@OP: You're only getting this crap in your thread because you asked a question about purchasing a Mac on a heavily Windows/PC biased forum, which also happens to be largely Android > iOS as well.

Turns out you can get a new macbook air inside your budget as well: www.trademe.co.nz

1286864 2012-07-10 02:21:00 For that price difference you might as well buy straight from apple. People dont seem to understand that an apple laptop will perform just as good as a windows one until you get to gamin laptops while looking better and being expensive. Thus there is no advantage in buying a windows laptop or a apple laptop if you have the money, this it comes down to personal preference and thus is an unwinable argument. Thus thus thus. 1286865 2012-07-10 03:15:00 This Macbook Pro from Dick Smith (www.dicksmith.co.nz) is a good buy and comes with core i5CPU, 4GB RAM, ODD, 720p HD Webcam, 500GB Harddisk, Thunderbolt, usb3.0 and firewire 800, wired and wireless networking, IPS LCD Display, and costs only $1899
A Windows laptop with comparable hardware will cost as much, so dont bother with Windows laptops. And 99% of the Windows laptops come with TN LCD Display which is inferior technology to IPS monitors. TN Panel has a hardware limitation of 256K colours where as IPS can display 16M colours, no wonder the same photo looks better on an Apple.

Costwise and performance wise, IPS > SPVA > TN

Wrong, if it was running windows it could be had for 600-700 cheaper.

I looked for one and I only found 1 laptop which was $700 cheaper than the Macbook Pro (Which can actually be purchased for $1749) which half a Kg more than the MacBook and the laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge) is quite large. The Thinkpad Edge also just appears to be a straight upgrade to the 3rd gen cpu's from the 2nd gen e.g. basically the same computer as the last one. Therefore I can safely say that the build quality of the Lenovo is inferior. All the other laptops of the same specification were only $300-$400 cheaper and were HP, I wouldn't recommend them.

That's not what you claimed is it?

Whats the point in comparing if they aren't at equivalent specs? The price on Ivy Bridge laptops is currently stupidly high.

As a side note that Asus laptop is good value if you arent going to do anything involving a graphics card ever. The 610m is crap (it gets beaten by the HD 4000). An i7-2670m is probably overkill then.

For the sake of comparison,

Pro's for the Asus:
Better CPU
Cheaper

Pro's for the Macbook:
Better graphics (card)
Better battery life (because it doesn't have any of the following: an i7, a dedicated graphics card or a quad core)

I'm also going to say because of the i7, quad core and dedicated graphics card the Macbook (despite being metal) will run cooler and quieter. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

1286870 2012-07-11 01:01:00 I've seen on dick smith an ASUS core i5/ i7 3rd gen for around $1300. I'll try to find the exact model to clear up the details. Nick G (16709)
1286871 2012-07-11 01:39:00 Nick G, The point of this thread is to suggest a good APPLE laptop that is within the price range of the OP. Slankydudl (16687)
