1264287 2012-03-11 06:57:00 If I watched a movie every three years I wouldn't store it anywhere.:D

edit.

Just checked the size of a movie on my HD, 19.3 GB

Monthly cap 10GB.

Yeah, Think I'd just buy another 2TB HD in a years time.

Or, a 5TB for the same cost seeing as technology never stands still.

1264288 2012-03-11 19:02:00 Nothing wrong with the iCloud after all the angel iJobs needs somewhere to sit. But remember and this does happen what happens when some fisherman trawls up the cable connecting us to the rest of the world, or a tsunami where the data centre is? You would look pretty dumb then trying to access your data when you could just have it at home. Yes cloud computing is the way ahead but for most people they won't or don't want to know what the real risks are. I won't be using it.

I can just here the phone calls now.

Hello Wainuitech here

My computers broken I can't get to any of my files

Are they on your computer?

Yes in something called the cloud storage, I have looked in my computer and I can't find them

That is something like what is going to happen :badpc:

1264289 2012-03-11 19:56:00 The Cloud or Apples iCloud is just another place to get your personal data hacked into. If it has an internet connection, its hackable, think of all those millions who have personal data sitting there... its only a matter of time. Iantech (16386)

Seems like you're just sour about your monthly cap, more than the actual benefits of something like this.
At my previous workplace we had 100mbps internet, no cap.
At my new workplace with have gigabit internet, no cap.

At home I have hundreds of gigs (20m down & 10m up), so much so that I never worry about it, even though my wife is capable of doing 150GB+ a month on her own.

Cost? Bugger all really. Certainly less than trying to fork out for a small server running a RAID array, and I pay zero to maintain everything that is Google hosted, from all my emails, to all my photos and videos. I have it stored on my phone and "Instant Upload" immediately shares it with "the cloud" (That one that you seem to despise so much). I can then also manually plug in my phone and (Because it's not an iPhone I don't have to Sync, but it shows up like a thumbdrive) I can copy everything off if I want to pop it on to a CD to give to somebody else. However, I don't bother, it's all already only, if I want to share the photos then I just do-so with G+. The photos are already online which means I don't have to piss around with anything at all. Just select the photos I want from the thumbnails, type the name of the person from my G+ Circles who I wanna share with (Or "your circles" or "public") and I'm done.
Whole process couldn't be easier or faster, and I've got a permanent backup of my images.

Why would I ever want to bother with a local file / email server that I have to maintain, setup, pay power for, pay for expanding RAID storage, pay for cooling, pay for offsite backups in case something happens and my house burns down, then manually do those off-site backups... But I'm more than happy for you to convince me otherwise? ;-)

Nope, try again.

I would increase my cap to suit my needs, Actually truth be told I switched it over to unlimited months ago.

1264292 2012-03-11 22:15:00 A lot of users store all their precious data on a single hard drive with no backup no matter how many times it's repeated what a bad Idea that is, cloud storage services would be a great Idea for those people.

Myself however I would probably never transfer my local content to a cloud service. I can see benefits for some things like my amazon account and my Comixology account which both keep track of what I've bought from them and allow me to resync if I lose the local copy. They won't be storing my files uniquely if they have any sense though, just a list of which content I own that they already store to sell anyway.

The Idea of playing my own music or videos over the cloud seems ludicrous though. I imagine an iFuture where your iPod stops playing your iMusic because you move out of the coverage area, or pauses to buffer something because the speed is too low. Even worse I could see them building in a "feature" that allowed the volume to be remotely limited or playback suspended if you moved into area where it was considered unsafe or something.

I have my entire CD collection ripped to lossless format on my media pc and stored on another machine as a backup because I don't want to have to rip it again if a hard drive fails. No cloud is getting it's grubby little mits on that collection.

So what's the issue with it then? You've lost me? It's not data charges ... so it must be... ???

Correct

Tried using Google Music? They cache the last XYZ number of songs, or certain predefined songs / albums, so even if you're out of coverage or overseas you still have music. Simple problem, simple solution

Pretty sure Google Music supported FLAC? Could be wrong though :-/

Of course data charges and unnecessary traffic is part of the issue, Just because I can afford to burn money doesn't mean I'm dumb enough to do so.

Quite frankly much of what is being promoted in regards to the "cloud" is absurd, Local storage makes so much more sense I'm surprised the hype behind the cloud has gained so much traction, I haven't yet witnessed teh real world follow on so maybe its all a dust storm anyway.

Uh....That would be a stupid problem with an equally stupid solution.
