2012-03-08 19:35:00 | Re Para Two...The copper wire runs from my house to the nearest green box up the road. At the moment we are on ADSL2. If we went the whole hog, I assume that our telepone number would be disconnected from the Orcon/Telecom system & transferred to the Genius system. How does a friend then get to our phone, which appears to be only one outlet on the Genius. Does the copper line still have to be paid for as a seperate entity from the Orcon $75 deal? If the copper line is used for any other reason, the medical alarm, fax, for instance...would the opper line, hence a phone connection still be required? The new Orcon deal does not mention whether the copper cost is included as it is in Orcons ADSL2 plan that we are on. PJ Not sure how the back end works but it does Calls come through no problem and there is no extra charges for the line as its all VOIP.

2012-03-08 19:40:00 | Its free. Fibre runs through Orcon Genius, I never paid a anything to switch to Genius. For me changing to fibre is nothing more than a phone call once its available in my area :) Your telling me that Orcon will run fiber into my house and install terminal gear to the fiber on the street for free??

2012-03-08 19:47:00 | There are no installation costs for Genius (at least there weren't for me) and the Genius is Fibre ready. Fibre will be laid by Chorus to the cabinets in the street and you using your existing copper to connect to the cabinet (NO ONE is offering fibre to the house, that you would have to pay for yourself if Chorus would even do it)

2012-03-08 20:19:00 | Actually offering fibre to the house is exactly what the Ultra fast broadband project is about, and they are starting to connect the first customers in some areas or are very close to it. I have no Idea on installation costs though. If you use a fibre or naked DSL connection with a VOIP service there are no extra line charges but you won't have a traditional phone line either. At the moment you may be stuck keeping a phone line to enable some services, but I'd talk to your ISP about that to see if they have a solution. | dugimodo (138) | |

2012-03-08 21:13:00 | So what is the $75 30GB with the big B. And lower down $75 30Gb with the little b? This doesn't have a landline right? If one wanted a traditional landline still possible? Does this Genius thing use data when you make calls? For just $75 a month Orcon customers receive 30GB of ultra-fast broadband and standard rates on all national calls or 5GB of ultra-fast broadband plus unlimited national landline calls. Voicemail, Call Waiting and Caller ID are provided free of charge, and VoIP calls do not count towards data caps. (For customers already using the fibre-ready Orcon Genius, switching over to fibre is simple. As soon as they receive notification that fibre is available in their street, they can simply call Orcon to request connection.) There are two options available for residential customers (incl. GST): Fast: 30Mbps down / 10Mbps up $75 30Gb cap $89 60Gb cap $99 100Gb cap $199 1,000Gb cap

You pretty much answered youreself, yes it uses data but they don't count it as part of your cap. There's no reason at all you couldn't keep a standard phone line and use the fibre fed broadband at the same time - other than cost. The big "B" little "b" thing is most likely just a mistake caused by whoever wrote it not knowing the difference. what I'm waiting/ hoping for is a cheaper service that doesn't include any VIOP or phone service because myself I'm perfectly happy with my cellphone as my only phone service an only have a landline to enable me to get broadband. I've looked into naked DSL a couple of times but it saves me nothing so I can't be bothered with it |

2012-03-08 21:47:00 | Thing is here folks don't know about technology, so if the internet is down they would need someone to visit them. They may prefer a std phoneline. $75 for 30MB is not bad though. We signed up a yr contract on ADSL2+ for about $80/mo (with std phoneline) due to expire in April.

2012-03-09 06:37:00 | I have been on Genius since it started here. Went through a period of frustration because everyone was on a learning curve! Now settled down to 14Mbps down and .8Mbps up. Phone is now good, but there was an issue with call waiting which I had disabled. Because the phone is VoiP, same as Skype, it is not suitable for alarms or emergency calls if there is a power cut or Broadband cut. It is not supposed to support Fax, but I have found that you can send a Fax at a slow speed of 700. Could be a problem with receiving a Fax unless sent at 700. The best part is that its about $77 a month for 30Gb including line maintenance insurance. | mzee (3324) | |
