1264065 2012-03-10 09:30:00 Maybe because it started out looking extremely good, but then telecom got their little snouts in the trough and the prospects have become very sucky since then. Also, it is tied to international feeds from the Southern Cross cable, the fiefdom of - - guess who?
The odds of a happy outcome are better with a lotto ticket.

I dunno, I've seen what wholesale prices are lately, and for them to offer 1000GB a month .... I've also seen HD offering large caps, and Slingshot. It's just that more ISP's need to "pick up on it" I guess? I used to be a strong believer that the SCC would be a bottleneck with pricing and whatnot, now if anything it's the opposite and I think it'll largely rely on ISP's to just ensure they're not oversubscribing and "milking" their customers too much :)

1264066 2012-03-10 19:32:00 Any ISP basing their business model on trusting telecom to play fair is very likely to get just what history indicates.
Even if the fiber network had remained unpoisoned by Telecom, they still could wield the sword of the Southern Cross cable to smite any company that appears to be exceeding what Telecom (I'm lumping in all it's fragments here) considers a suitably minor market share.

Of course, they might encourage the playing field to be level, but what the non-drinkers will do with their pallets of Tui is a mystery. ;)

Like me. And not just the cost either really.
I remember friends who had the first Telecom broadband trying to talk me into it.....it cost a fortune, for some weird reason I can't remember now, they had to get a 2nd line run in, and dial up was reasonably commonplace then.

In the end what made me get it was to free up the phone when online, not so much the speed.

1264068 2012-03-13 08:26:00 I get tired of so many people kicking and screaming for better speeds, bigger caps, and lower prices, and expecting it yesterday. The more we use the cheaper it gets, simple economy of scale. But it takes time, as in years. The prices and speeds we enjoy now would have seemed crazily good when Broadband first started appearing around the country a few years back.

Spoke with somebody interesting tonight, provided some very interesting insights into the additional costs around UFB as well as ADSL2+ / VDSL2. Facsinating ...

Oh and I think I read somewhere recently it was 2.5mbps per-connection for the over-subscription..

1264070 2012-03-13 10:02:00 Ah yeah just about the costings over and above the *raw* port-cost... And what it costs to shuffle data across the country... things like that. Lets just say Orcon must be making a huge loss.... Chilling_Silence (9)
