1288275 2012-07-13 07:32:00 Been presented with a Gigabyte HD 5870 with 1 noisy fan.

Model is T128010SH
12v 0.25AMP
It has 3 wires.

There are a few used ones on ebay but I already have one of those.

Anywhere to source one locally?

1288277 2012-07-13 13:59:00 Maybe, but it will have to match in with the second fan or I'll have to buy 2.
Interesting, 1 fan has 3 wires & the other has 2.
Same part number.

1288278 2012-07-13 14:55:00 Get the one with 3 wires, it's the RPM readout for the sensor.

If this isn't present, the card will probably think the fan has failed and refuse to operate.

1288279 2012-07-14 00:29:00 Yes it's the 3 wire one thats crook.

Here is the same fan, only with 4 wires.

1288280 2012-07-14 00:38:00 4 wires means it has an onboard PWM controller.

You could probably use the 4 wire model and just leave the PWM control wire disconnected.

1288281 2012-07-14 04:20:00 Might have to go that way if a 3 wire dosent come up.
Would have to hack into the wiring though as the plug will be different.

1288282 2012-07-14 06:13:00 The contacts that are crimped onto the wires should be removable from the plastic plug, you usually just need a sewing pin\needle or such to lift up the plastic tabs that hold them in place and then pull the contacts out.

So, you could probably swap the plugs around and then remove the extra wire.

1288283 2012-07-15 06:36:00 OK, but I want this to finish up so that the GPU will still control the fan speed, as it did standard. Driftwood (5551)
1288284 2012-07-15 07:55:00 OK, but I want this to finish up so that the GPU will still control the fan speed, as it did standard.

It still should, without the PWM wire connected the fan should operate as a standard fan and any external control should still apply.
