30792 2002-01-11 16:11:00 Hi everyone.
I'm running WinMe and have a small problem on my taskbar that I cant remember how to fix.

How do I get rid of an icon on my taskbar without affecting the program running.

I'll kick myself when you tell me.

Cheers.

30794 2002-01-11 21:02:00 I'll kick you :)

You can't. Except if there's an option in that program that removes the icon from the system tray or taskbar.

Yes? if so, you might be able to remove the icon, which program. Some programs such as Realplayer want to sit in the task bar for instant start up. You might be able to right click the icon and see if there is any option to quit or otherwise configure so it will not load at start up, if not through the icon maybe in the program proper, something is ticked. The other place to look would be your start>programs>startup, have you installed something that has setup a link in that menu, if so, try dragging it out to the main menu drop down and see if that helps.

30796 2002-01-11 21:31:00 Hello Graeme,
There are a couple of options, for the icons on the right hand side of the taskbar, rightclicking the icon will sometimes provide a temp. removal, or permantely go to start settings, and taskbar @ startmenu, remove the icon through the startup folder. or,

open the program that represents the icon, and search the options, remove the tick allowing the icon to display.

For the icons on the left hand side, right click and click delete.
cheers,
Bob

30797 2002-01-11 21:36:00 If the icon is in the quick launch toolbar on the left just right click and select delete or if you want to close the quick launch right click anywhere on the task bar and select toolbars from the popup menu and remove the tick beside quick launch.

If it is in the systray on the right you can right click and close it for the current windows session or if you want to remove it completely go Start>run and type in 'msconfig' (without the ' ')select the startup tab and untick the program you don't want to load at startup. You can even shut down the systray itself from here. All of these procedures are reversible by backtracking and ticking the relevant boxes again. You can still access anything you shut down normally through Start>programs etc.

30798 2002-01-12 02:29:00 If it's a program that's actually running, you can't. It's Windows' way of showing what's open. If it's an item on the start menu, you can just drag it to the recycle bin. :-) Guest (0)
30799 2002-01-13 03:19:00 Just a maybe ...

Might it be possible to go to the Properties of the programme file, and set it to have no icon? (Might need to create a 'blank' icon).
